The Butterflies & Macro Photography of Bulgaria Holiday is of 7 nights duration & is ideal for photographing butterflies, orchids & more, & is offered on a full board, non-shared basis, between the dates of 17th – 24th June 2018. You can hold a place with a £300 deposit, the trip itself costs £1399 per participant.
The rich biodiversity & variety of habitats offers excellent opportunities to capture images of dragonflies, damselflies, grasshoppers, spiders, beetles, flowers & orchids as well as a kaleidoscope of butterflies.
The summer season offers fantastic opportunities thanks to the area’s rich biodiversity & variety of habitats.
The main target species will be butterflies such as Apollo, Balkan and scarce Coppers, Niobe, High Brown, Dark Green, Twin-spot & other fritillaries, Great Sooty Satyr, many blues, hairstreaks & skippers. But the areas we will be visiting will also provide opportunities to photograph flowers & orchids, moths, dragonflies & damselflies, grasshoppers, spiders, beetles & more.
The sessions will comprise of early starts & late evenings to take advantage of the best light & the fact that the butterflies & insects are normally motionless at this time. The early afternoons can be used to take a siesta or enjoy the excellent panoramic views, whilst avoiding the harsh midday sun.
The tour will start with 2 nights in a small village east of Sofia where we will explore the area for fritillaries, blues, gliders & emperors before moving on to a picturesque village in the heart of the Sredna Gora mountain. The area has been designated as an architectural reserve & we will spend a couple of days here exploring local meadows for Chequered, Large, Alcon & other blues, Russian Heath, Black-veined White, White Admiral, many fritillaries & skippers, as well as dragonflies & damselflies.
Our final destination is 3-night stay in a butterfly rich plateau in the Western Rhodope mountain. Here we will explore the surrounding meadows, looking for fritillaries, blues, hairstreaks, skippers & orchids.
We offer an all-inclusive accommodation & meal package to ensure that all you need to worry about is taking unique & mesmerising photographs.

We recommend that you dress up warmly for the early mornings – it can get quite cold sitting in the hide in the early hours. Wearing layers is advisable so that they may be shed at a later stage where necessary.
- Warm fleece for early mornings and once the sun has set.
- Clothing for hide work should be camouflage or neutral browns & greens.
- Water bottle or flask for tea & coffee.
- Digital camera body.
- Macro Lenses.
- Lenses in the range 70mm – 200mm.
- Lenses with f2.8 will give the best light capture and speed of focussing.
- An alternative to long telephoto lenses is a tele-converter (e.g. 1.4x or 2x).
- Spare memory cards.

- Lens cleaning cloth.
- Laptop or another type of storage device – we will be shooting lots of images.
