Red Squirrel in the snowy conditions of the Highland winter photographed on a NaturesLens wildlife photography workshop

Cairngorms Winter Wildlife Photography Workshop Details

Whilst this event has passed, there is a new Scottish Highland Winter Wildlife Photography Workshop for 2015 already available, you can secure a place on the NaturesLens Scottish Highland Winter Wildlife Photography Workshop with a deposit of only £250, your balance will be due December 2015.
Many of the iconic winter species of the United Kingdom are to be found in the Cairngorms region of Scotland. Red squirrels (stunning in their full dark red winter coat complete with large ear tufts), crested tits, red deer in woodland and more. Running from Friday to Friday, the NaturesLens Winter Photography Workshop takes in all these species plus has an optional extension available for the following weekend. The main workshop is based in excellent self-catering accomodation in Kincraig. We have a selection of hides available for participant use, including red squirrels in woodland, red squirrels jumping and red squirrels on a reflection pool, plus crested tits and other woodland birds.  On one day, our clients will also head out to spot and photograph red deer on mountain sides, in woodland and on the edges of one of the many lochs in the area.

The red squirrel has a typical head-and-body length of 19 to 23 cm (7.5 to 9 in), a tail length of 15 to 20 cm (5.9 to 7.9 in) and a mass of 250 to 340 g (8.8 to 12 oz). It is not sexually dimorphic, as males and females are the same size. The red squirrel is somewhat smaller than the eastern grey squirrel which has a head-and-body length of 25 to 30 cm (9.5 to 12 in) and weighs between 400 and 800 g (14 oz to 1.8 lb). It is thought that the long tail helps the squirrel to balance and steer when jumping from tree to tree and running along branches and may keep the animal warm during sleep.

The European Crested Tit, or simply Crested Tit, Lophophanes cristatus (formerly Parus cristatus), is a passerine bird in the tit family Paridae. It is a widespread and common resident breeder in coniferous forests throughout central and northern Europe and in deciduous woodland in France and the Iberian peninsula. In Great Britain, it is chiefly restricted to the ancient pinewoods of Inverness and Strathspey in Scotland, and seldom strays far from its haunts. A few vagrant Crested Tits have been seen in England. It is resident, and most individuals do not migrate.

The optional extension adds a further weekend of winter photography to the trip and allows for the photography of pine martens and badgers in a dusk hide, hide photography of buzzards landing to feed, a day to locate and photograph ptarmigan and another day for the iconic mountain hare. Accomodation for the extension is in a comfortable hotel in Aviemore.

Whilst the bulk of the days are spent in the hides, one of the days does include a Birds of Prey workshop, at a truly spectacular location that NaturesLens have access to. The birds that we photograph vary for each occasion that we have the services of the falconer but, we typically have access to Great Grey, Snowy & Ural owls plus a Bald Eagle.

The winter photography workshop lends itself to the pursuance of beautiful winter pictures to bolster the portfolio of any wildlife photographer who wants to showcase the beauty of the wildlife to be found in Scotland at this time of year.
