Val’s images of Atlantic Puffins from Skomer

Val was amongst the small group that visited Skomer Island with Daniel in mid-July, although they had challenging weather on a couple of the days, one evening yielded super golden light, & the group certainly made the most of the opportunity to capture subtly lit images of the Atlantic Puffins, after all, that is what they went for.

Dan reports in following a successful Skomer Island visit

I’m always filled with anticipation heading over to Skomer Island; the gannets, puffins & other auks flying around the boat as well as the sea rolling. In addition to that, on this occasion, we had very limited visibility into the sea mist creating a great atmosphere.

A variety of weather is something I quite like with photography but I’ll always keep my fingers crossed for at least one afternoon of killer golden light!

Alas, it was foggy for the first two days. However with these conditions we were able to experiment with high key simple portraits on a white background. The resulting photos looked as though we’d trained the puffins to pose in a studio environment.

The flat light allowed us to shoot all day & because of the time of year quite a few pufflings were exploring the area around their nesting burrows – a lovely sight. Here’s one just peaking out;

A puffling photographed as it peeked from the burrow whilst on the NaturesLens Puffins of Skomer Photography Holiday

The benefit of murky weather becomes apparent when waiting for the Manx Shearwaters – they come in earlier when compared to nights with a clear sky meaning a little longer in bed for us! I don’t think I’ll ever tire of wandering out across the island at night with the sound of just a small proportion of the 300,000 pairs that nest on the island curling around above our heads.

On our third & final day the island was blessed with lovely weather, it was 30 degrees & positively tropical. That day we enjoyed the nice weather waiting & hoping for it to continue into the afternoon & evening; & it did.

We had a wonderful sunset at the Wick with puffin numbers increasing as the light got better & better, everyone took a completely different set of photos when compared to the higher key images captured with the flat light.

Myself & one guest, John, stayed at the Wick well after dark to take some photos in the blue light & into the night. Having not done this before I found it great fun seeing the puffins’ activity at night.

They continued to renovate their burrows, squabble & make their strange noises but the place felt a lot more serene!

All in all, it was simply another great trip to Skomer Island.

Creative Puffin Images on Skomer Island

One of the main reasons for staying on Skomer Island is the opportunity to shoot in golden light after the day trippers have left the island. But if the weather is kind, the opportunities carry on beyond the golden light period for another short session when even more creative Puffin images can be achieved.

Sean sent us in a few examples of some the creative puffin images that he has been able to achieve at the end of the day from his recent stay on the island.

Head to Norway for a Lofoten in Winter Photography Holiday

In the northwest of Norway lies one of the most beautiful areas of Europe, the Lofoten islands. During winter this area turns into a paradise for every landscape photographer & in 2017 you can experience this for yourself with NaturesLens!

The Lofoten islands offer a broad variety of photogenic scenes & landscapes, including impressive steep mountains rising straight out of the fjords & picturesque fishing villages made up of typical red houses. From detailed patterns in the sand on the beaches, to the stunning lightshows of northern light in the sky, Lofoten has it all. One minute you are standing,  photographing large waves breaking on the boulders in the surf, & the next, it starts snowing, changing the scenery into a white paradise.

During winter the days are short & the sun does not rise far above the horizon. This results in beautiful coloured & soft sunlight throughout the day, & when the clouds move in front of the sun, the already rugged landscape develops into something quite sinister.

During the long nights, if we are lucky, the group will be entertained by the spectacular northern lights, the aurora borealis. The borealis appears when solar wind particles collide with air molecules in the earth’s atmosphere, transferring their energy into light. When this phenomenon appears & lights up the surrounding landscapes, the dancing light show will simply mesmerise you.

This stunning area is the playground for the Lofoten in Winter Photography Holiday, an intensive 8-day long tour scheduled for late January 2017. During this trip our tour leaders will help you to improve your photography skills in landscape, night & creative or abstract photography. You will learn how to use techniques such as panning, long exposure, filter usage, basics in multiple exposure blending & image processing. All photo locations are reachable by car & within 50-200 metre walking distance.

The main focus during the tour will be photographing landscapes & northern lights, but our photography leaders will point out the many small details to be found at almost every location, giving you plenty of possibilities to take abstract & creative shots which you might have otherwise missed. During winter, wildlife is scarce on the islands, but when & if we come across any wildlife, we can attempt to photograph it if desired by the participants.

During the nights we keep a close eye on the sky for any signs of the northern lights, & as soon as the show intensifies, we will go outside to experience & photograph this amazing phenomenon.

All meals are included, breakfast & lunch are bought in the supermarket & are prepared by ourselves. The evening meals either take place in our accommodation or in one of the local restaurants.

The Lofoten in Winter photography holiday is guided by Floris Smeets & Kevin Morgans.

Floris lives in Norway, speaks the language & knows the local customs. He works all year-round as a (nature) guide around his home in southeast Norway, in the rugged mountains of Dovrefjell & obviously also Lofoten. Floris knows as no other how to find & approach wildlife & has an impressive collection of pictures of difficult species such as wild reindeer.

Kevin is an all-round nature photographer & a veteran leader of NaturesLens workshops & photography holidays. He has visited Norway a number of times & worked closely with Floris in the past.

Together Floris & Kevin are rich in their knowledge of photography & they enthusiastically share that knowledge with all the participants.

The NaturesLens Lofoten in Winter Photography Holiday is scheduled for the dates of 22nd-29th January 2017 & costs £2499 for all 7 nights on a full board basis with shared accommodation. The tour has a lower limit of 4 participants & an upper limit of 6.
