More Osprey Photography from Blue Cypress Lake

, ,

As mentioned previously, there are a number of blog posts coming showing the bird life of Florida from the trip in early 2016, & this is the 2nd of several posts in which I will publish images of some of the wildlife that I was lucky enough to photograph during the week-long trip to photograph ospreys in Florida.

PS my favourite image from this set, is right at the bottom, I was saving, what I thought was the best until last!

An Osprey Perched On The Very Top Of One Of Cypress Trees Photographed On The NatureLens Ospreys Of Blue Cypress Lake Photography Holiday

In April 2016, I was lucky enough to lead a group of clients & friends to Florida on the NatureLens Ospreys of Blue Cypress Lake Photography Holiday, our main target – rather obviously – the ospreys, that have made the cypress trees that have grown on the banks on Blue Cypress Lake their home.

This is the 1st of several posts in which I will publish images of some of the wildlife that I was lucky enough to photograph on the week-long trip.

During the 7 days that the trip took place over, we ventured out onto the lake every morning prior to sunrise, returning 4 hours later when the light became too harsh for photography.

It was evident that although a large number of osprey chicks had already hatched, the need for nesting material was still vast, with many birds returning to nests with large amounts of material to build or line the nest with.

At the beginning of the week, the osprey chicks were barely tall enough to see over the edge of the nest, within the next 7 days, after being fed each day with fish caught by both the parents, the chicks were large enough for us to clearly observe them & their behaviour.

The sheer number of ospreys – there must be a nest in every other tree – coupled with the number of chicks demanding to be fed, lead to a constant back & forth of adult birds, heading out then returning with freshly caught fish, of a number of varieties, to feed their ravenous young.

Big thanks to Fabiola & Alfred, who were a great help with information when I was initially setting the trip up.

It is my intention to return to Florida & the Ospreys of Blue Cypress Lake in April 2019, for a follow-up trip; as well as the ospreys & the birds of the rookeries, we will be seeking out opportunities with barred owls in the late afternoon – & have dedicated an additional 2 days to photography of Cape Coral’s Burrowing Owls.

A great selection of client images from our Osprey Photography Holiday

, ,

If you ever wondered how some of our photography holidays come about, many of them are worked on with our clients, between us ideas are born & from there progressed, or as Derek, who attended the NaturesLens Osprey Photography Holiday, says …

“It was about two years ago that David & I started talking  about the possibilities of photographing Ospreys in Florida. We had both decided that most of the different possibilities of photographing Ospreys in the UK had pretty much been done to death & we wanted to try and get a different portfolio of Osprey images.

David did a lot of work in putting the trip together & also included a variety of birds other than the ospreys at ‘rookeries’ as it was the nesting season for most egret & heron type birds. David, using his contacts in Florida, also managed to locate a site to photograph the 3rd rarest bird in North America, the Snail Kite!

We all knew the trip would be good but it was not until we got there we realised how good … the photography opportunities were simply amazing & the lake setting quite magical just on it’s own.

Hopefully, the images that I captured below will go some way to demonstrating the superb photographic opportunity, I would fully recommend the trip to anyone who wants that different & special image.”

Here is a selection of the images that Derek captured whilst in Florida attending our Osprey Photography Holiday during late-April 2016 …

‘Osprey Photography Heaven’

, , ,

Below are some of the images captured by one of our clients on the recent Ospreys of Blue Cypress Lake Photography Holiday, the photography holiday was described by one guest as ‘exceeding all my expectations of how many ospreys we would be able to photograph’, whilst another stated ‘this is osprey photography heaven’!

Heading out to make another catch, one of the many ospreys that flew above the boat evey morning - photographed on the NaturesLens Ospreys of Blue Cypress Lake Photography Holiday

These comments are from guests who have spent a lot of time in Scotland, photographing the ospreys in the Highlands – principally Aviemore; instead of waiting several hours for an osprey to dive, each early morning boat trip in Florida saw many ospreys overhead, in their nests, calling, fishing, chasing one & other – every type of behaviour was on show, for hours at a time! Blue Cypress Lake – so called because of the blue appearance of the cypress trees as the morning sun’s rays reflect off the water – is an idyllic destination for photographers wishing to add remarkable bird images to their wildlife photography portfolio.

Hundreds of Ospreys nest in the beautiful Cypress trees that adorn the lake. There were over 200 nesting pairs at last count, all in the trees which dot the lake’s shoreline & grow into the water. The NaturesLens Ospreys of Cypress Lake wildlife tour is focused on these fascinating birds & their wonderful natural habitat.

Blue Cypress Lake Osprey Photography Holiday

,

We have just posted the event page & details for an osprey photography holiday, ospreys are a favourite subject of ours, nesting, diving & skimming the lochs of the Scottish Highlands, they were one of the first subjects that both pushed our abilities & gave us an adrenalin rush, our latest tour ventures further afield than Scotland however; we are heading to Blue Cypress Lake in Florida, where there are between 200 & 300 osprey nests located in the cypress trees around the lake itself.

An Osprey soars above Blue Cypress Lake in Florida - the kind of photographic opportunity that is available on the NaturesLens Ospreys of Blue Cypress Lake Photography Holiday

Spanning seven days, the NaturesLens Blue Cypress Lake Osprey Photography Holiday will include day & evening boat trips out on to the lake on most days, it also includes a day visit to the Viera Wetlands Centre a haven for birdlife & a day visit to an alligator farm with a large wading bird rookery – both offer great photographic opportunities. The timing of the trip is deliberate so that we can observe the parents bringing fish to their new offspring. We should be able to photograph Ospreys on their nests at eye level, diving for fish or gathering nest material. Read more
