Ice Grizzlies of Bear Cave Mountain Photography Holiday

Join NaturesLens on a wild Canadian adventure, travelling into the depths of Yukon wilderness to capture unrivalled images of the native grizzly bear as it feeds on spawning salmon in the Fishing Branch River. The specific conditions & sub-zero temperatures in & around this river transforms grizzlies into ice bears, as their fur becomes frozen & frosted; completely changing their appearance as photography subjects.

Only a fortunate few can witness this spectacle annually, & the unique nature of this wildlife photography experience means that we can only offer at most 3 places on this trip, typically only 2, so booking early is essential.

NaturesLens invites wildlife photography enthusiasts on a journey to a national park in the Yukon region, Canada’s wildest & most unspoilt territory, to capture awe-inspiring images of the native grizzly bears as they feed on spawning salmon. This natural wonder only occurs for six weeks of the year, so the lucky few who get to witness this event will take home memories to treasure for years to come.

The location for this wildlife photography holiday lies within a snowball’s throw of the Arctic Circle in the Fishing Branch Protected Area, where the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation & the regional government have joined hands to set aside 2,500 sq. miles of pristine wilderness as Yukon’s largest territorial park.

An Ice Covered Grizzly Bear Of The Yukon Typical Of The Kind Of Image That May Be Captured On The NaturesLens Ice Grizzlies of Bear Cave Mountain Photographic Holiday

The season to witness this phenomenon is short, just six weeks long, in which the grizzlies gather to feast on the spawning salmon. Their feeding behaviour is intense during this period as they are attempting to put on enough weight to last them through their hibernation in nearby limestone caverns over the winter months & the Fishing Branch River is the key to it all.

Fed by underground springs, it remains unfrozen all year round, & every autumn 35,000 chum salmon make the 1,500-mile odyssey from the Bering Sea to spawn in its pure waters. At times there are so many fish in the river you feel you could walk across it on their backs without getting your feet wet.

The salmon, in turn, attract the grizzlies, as many as 40 every season & as they wade through the river an extraordinary transformation takes place. Within minutes their wet fur freezes in the sub-zero temperatures & they become ice bears to the delight of wildlife photographers.

Being allowed into the park is a rare privilege, as the region is very sacred to the indigenous Vuntut Gwitchin communities who reside in the area, & put great ancestral & cultural value on the land & the environment within the park. The 2500sq miles which make up the park was set aside by the government & local communities as an area for preservation, & the opportunity to capture its rarely disturbed wildlife population on camera is not one to miss out on. A guide with in-depth knowledge of the wildlife & culture of the Yukon national park will lead you throughout the experience to aid you in obtaining editorial-quality images that truly convey the magic of this exceptional wildlife spectacle.

A young Grizzly Bear alongside the Taku river in British Columbia - an example of the photography opportunities that you will experience on the NaturesLens Grizzly Bears of British Columbia Photography Holiday

Grizzly Bears of British Columbia Photography Holiday

Join NaturesLens & delve into the heart of British Columbia, navigating the unspoilt region that surrounds the Taku river to track & photograph the outstanding range of native species that thrive in this expanse of forested wilderness.

The subject focus of this 11-day wildlife photography experience is the Grizzly Bears of the Taku River; the true king of the forest, & you will have the chance to witness in awe their power, intelligence & honest nature, making them the perfect subject for any keen wildlife photographer.

Unlike most other operators who spend 4-6 days in this area, we have negotiated a special rate that allows for 8 days at a camp alongside the Taku river in British Columbia.

A pair of young Grizzly Bears leaping into the Taku river in British Columbia - an example of the photography opportunities that you will experience on the NaturesLens Grizzly Bears of the Yukon Photography Holiday

NaturesLens invites amateur & semi-professional wildlife photographers to join them in getting up close to the magnificent grizzly bear, as it thrives in dense forests that surround the Taku river in British Columbia. This region is famed for its diverse wildlife inhabitants, & conservation efforts in the area have done a great deal in allowing species to live in peace away from human interference. Our trip therefore offers a rare opportunity to experience this environment & capture stunning wildlife images to add to your portfolio.

With the help of an expert local guide with years of experience working with the bears, you will be led to advantageous viewing points from which to take photographs, amongst other native species, benefitting from guidance on how best to spot the animals without causing any disturbance which might compromise your photography opportunities, or frighten the animals. The isolated location of our camp where the trip is based has been selected for the highest potential for bear photography that it offers, & we make it our goal to provide you with an experience which is both rewarding & unforgettable.

In contrast to popular belief, grizzly bears are not threatening creatures by nature; they are curious, tolerant & not interested in getting into trouble with photographers. As long as photographers remain respectful & stay calm, grizzly bears can be wonderful subjects for wildlife photography; allowing you to make the most of their captivating behaviour. The forests that cover this region provide a stunning backdrop for imagery, as the depth of green hues & soft light penetrating the tree tops create an environment that is both peaceful & mysterious for you to capture on camera.

You will be completely immersed in the world of the Grizzly Bears from the moment you arrive on the Taku River, living within their forest environment from dawn until dusk. Bears of all ages, both male & female, will be present throughout your trip, so there are hugely diverse bear photography opportunities for you to utilise including the chance to photograph adorable grizzly cubs as they explore & learn to survive.

A pair of Grizzly Bears sparring in the Taku river in British Columbia - an example of the photography opportunities that you will experience on the NaturesLens Grizzly Bears of the Yukon Photography Holiday

You will also have a range of viewing platforms at your disposal which lie dotted throughout the forests, giving you the chance to be more independent & photograph the bears in an unguided situation, obtaining both wide-angle shots of bears within the landscape, as well as close up portrait shots capturing the bears’ majestic features in detail. There may also be opportunities to photograph additional native species, including moose, wolves, eagles & other bird species that might make an appearance during your visit, as well as salmon leaping from the river tempting the bears.

This trip offers some of the finest & most intimate grizzly bear viewing where you will discover that co-existence with grizzly bears is not only safe & peaceful but also entertaining & fun. By showing respect & tolerance for this magnificent animal you will learn the true nature of grizzly bears & in doing so, will help set a course for their survival.

All internal transfers, accommodation & meals at the camp are all included to make things as straightforward & enjoyable for you as possible.

All our photography opportunities are supervised and conducted in safe manner, enabling you to gain the best from the NaturesLens Grizzly Bears of the Yukon Photography Holiday

The location of the base for the trip can only be accessed by helicopter, & we also include this exciting experience in the price of the trip, which offers you another unique view of the landscape. The nature of the trip means group sizes must be kept small to allow for the best possible experience for photographer & animal alike, so booking early is essential.
