During the first week of the NaturesLens Grey Seals of Lincolnshire photography holidays, Sean took the group out onto the sandbanks at low tide where they were able to capture images of the seals in the surf. They were lucky enough to get some lovely shots of these iconic mammals swimming around, frolicking in the surf & curiously popping their heads up through the waves.
To achieve these sort of images, our guests had to get eye-level with the subject which meant lying down on the wet sand, so waterproofs & wellies were a must!
Quick tip: a right-angled viewfinder comes in very handy as it makes achieving “low” shots a lot easier on the neck.
Even when the seals were in the surf, it was vital that the group kept their distance from the mothers & pups to not disturb them. For this reason, long lenses were essential, mainly if you wanted close-up shots. Seals are wild animals & are very powerful with teeth similar to a dog & can inflict a nasty bite (even the pups). They are supremely adapted for living on the sea but can move incredibly fast on land, albeit inelegantly.
Under the careful stewardship of Sean, our guests learnt about seal behaviour as well as having the opportunity to experiment with light, capturing environment shots & honing their composition skills.
JOIN SEAN IN 2018 TO PHOTOGRAPH NORFOLK'S SEALS
Rather than return to the Seals of Lincolnshire, during November 2018, Sean will be leading a week-long holiday focussed on Norfolk Seal photography for NaturesLens, specifically between the dates of November 25 – 30 2018.
The cost is £999 per participant which includes five nights accommodation in a gorgeous cottage on a dinner, bed & breakfast basis; your meals will be warming, homely & plentiful to get you warmed through & filled up after a long day on the beach. Numbers are limited to ensure that the trip is sustainable, ethical & enjoyable for every photographer.
