The Atlantic Forest supports an exceptional variety of colourful species. The primary targets include [Red-breasted Toucans](https://natureslens.co.uk/photograph/red-breasted-toucan/), [Saffron Toucanets](https://natureslens.co.uk/photograph/saffron-toucanet/), [Spot-billed Toucanets](https://natureslens.co.uk/photograph/spot-billed-toucanet/), [Green-headed Tanagers](https://natureslens.co.uk/photograph/green-headed-tanager/) & [Black-cheeked Gnateaters](https://natureslens.co.uk/photograph/black-cheeked-gnateater/) — all endemic or near-endemic to this forest system. Beyond the headline species, tanagers, dacnis, woodpeckers & hummingbirds are all regular at the feeding stations & forest trails we work. The forest canopy also supports primates, butterflies & occasional [mammal](https://natureslens.co.uk/for/mammal/) encounters, so there’s productive variety between bird sessions. The second is in the Mantiqueira Mountains at a higher elevation, where cooler conditions bring a different species mix including the [Black-cheeked Gnateater](https://natureslens.co.uk/photograph/black-cheeked-gnateater/). Moving between the two means you’re not photographing the same birds in the same settings all week.
