The feeding hide approach used on this trip trades some of that open-wild unpredictability for a dramatically higher success rate, without the birds themselves being anything other than genuinely wild, free-ranging animals that choose to visit. That trade-off matters most in winter, when short daylight hours leave little room for a day spent searching rather than photographing. A fixed, known location lets the whole group settle in before first light & be ready the moment the first eagle appears, rather than racing to find & approach a bird already spotted at a distance. ## What You’ll Photograph in Sweden ### Golden Eagle & White-tailed Eagle [Golden Eagle](https://natureslens.co.uk/photograph/golden-eagle/) is the more cautious of the two species here, typically arriving after the [White-tailed Eagles](https://natureslens.co.uk/photograph/white-tailed-eagle/) have already settled, while [White-tailed Eagle](https://natureslens.co.uk/photograph/white-tailed-eagle/) — [Europe](https://natureslens.co.uk/discover/europe/)’s largest bird of prey — tends to dominate the feeding station whenever it’s present. Seeing both species interact, & occasionally clash, over the same food source is one of the trip’s real highlights. Because the hides sit at a fixed, known distance from the feeding station, lens choice & exposure settings can be dialled in ahead of time, leaving photographers free to concentrate on timing & composition as the birds arrive & depart. Beyond the eagles themselves, the setting is a genuine draw in its own right — deep snow, frozen lakes, & pine forest silenced by winter cold give every image a stark, minimal quality that suits both action shots at the feeding station & quieter landscape frames between sessions. Winter light this far north stays low throughout the short daylight hours, giving a soft, warm tone even in the middle of the day that photographers further south rarely see outside the first & last hour of light. ## When to Visit Sweden Our current departure runs in early March, still deep in the Scandinavian winter when snow cover is at its most reliable & the eagles’ dependence on the feeding station is at its peak, before the spring thaw & the return of more natural food sources. ### A Day at the Hide Days typically begin before first light with a short, cold walk or snowmobile transfer to the hide, followed by a long, still session waiting for the first eagles to arrive. Conny & Robin split the group across two hide positions to maximise everyone’s chance of a clean, unobstructed view of the feeding station throughout the day. ## Planning Your Trip to Sweden A telephoto lens in the 400mm to 600mm range suits the fixed hide distances well, & a sturdy bean bag or hide-mounted support is generally more practical than a full tripod given the limited space inside. Temperatures regularly fall well below freezing through a Swedish March, so genuinely warm, layered winter clothing is essential rather than optional — several hours of stillness in a cold hide is a very different physical challenge from an active day’s walking elsewhere in the series. Hand & foot warmers are worth packing alongside spare camera batteries, which lose charge noticeably faster in the cold. Lulea is the usual arrival airport, with a road transfer onward to the hide region used for the trip. Outside of the March window, the eagles disperse across a much wider territory as natural prey becomes easier to find, making sightings far less predictable & the feeding station considerably quieter. That seasonal dependence is exactly why the trip is timed for deep winter rather than any other point in the year. ### Two Guides, Twice the Local Knowledge Having both Conny & Robin on the trip means the group benefits from two independent sets of local knowledge about recent eagle activity & feeding patterns, rather than relying on a single guide’s read of the situation. It also means the group can be split between hide positions without losing experienced guidance at either one. ### What to Pack Beyond the Camera Bag Thermal base layers, an insulated down jacket, & winter-rated boots are essential for the long, still hours inside the hide, where the body cools far faster than during an active day outdoors. A flask for a hot drink is a small but genuinely welcome addition to a pre-dawn start. Photography gloves that allow finger dexterity while still offering real insulation are worth the investment for this trip specifically — fumbling with settings through thick standard gloves has cost more than one photographer a clean shot at the critical moment an eagle drops in to feed. ### A Trip for Raptor Specialists & Newcomers Alike Because the hide does the hard work of bringing the birds into range, this trip suits photographers who have never photographed a wild eagle before just as well as those chasing a specific shot to complete a raptor portfolio.
