For photographers, the most significant differences only become apparent once you are in the field, when the day’s best photographic opportunities refuse to fit neatly into a timetable. Traditional safari operators perform an important role & introduce thousands of people to extraordinary wildlife every year. Their challenge, however, is different from ours. A conventional safari often brings together guests with a wide range of interests, & their itineraries must balance game viewing, sightseeing, comfort & logistics in a way that satisfies everyone. Photography introduces an entirely different set of priorities. Photographers often want to leave camp before first light, are reluctant to return just because breakfast is waiting if conditions remain exceptional, & judge the success of a day by the quality of the opportunities they experienced rather than how many animals they saw. Neither approach is better – they simply serve different audiences.
