Why Photograph Wildlife in Kenya Kenya offers two very different wildlife photography experiences, & the contrast between them is worth understanding before you choose your trip. The Maasai Mara is about scale & immediacy. Game drives across open savannah in elevated vehicles put you alongside predator-prey dynamics that unfold multiple times per day. Lions on termite mounds. Cheetahs scanning from raised ground. Leopards carrying kills into acacia canopy. The density of big cat activity in the Mara Triangle is without parallel in sub-Saharan Africa. Between July & October the wildebeest migration arrives with it – river crossings at the Mara River generate the most dramatic wildlife sequences available anywhere on the continent. Shompole, set on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, is entirely different. NaturesLens operates from permanent waterhole hides dug to ground level. After dark, leopards, lions, hyenas, & servals are drawn in by the water, illuminated by purpose-built lighting rigs that allow natural-looking photography without disturbance. You photograph African predators at close range in conditions no vehicle safari replicates. October-November is the preferred window: the dry season concentrates nocturnal activity at remaining water sources. Photographic Conditions Equatorial light is hard by 9am & again from 2-4pm. Game drives are structured around the early morning & late afternoon. For the Mara, bring your longest optic: 500-600mm gives essential reach across open plains. For Shompole hides, subjects are close enough that a 300-400mm suits better than maximum telephoto reach. Photography Themes Kenya offers outstanding opportunities for wildlife photography, with the chance to photograph species such as African Buffalo, African Elephant, African Fish Eagle, African Leopard, African Lion, African Wild Dog, Black Rhinoceros, Cheetah, Giraffe, Grant’s Gazelle, Hippopotamus, Impala, Lammergeier, Lilac-breasted Roller, Martial Eagle, Masai Giraffe, Plains Zebra, Spotted Hyena & Striped Hyena.
