A European Bee Eater Which Has Just Captured A Butterfly Typical Of The Type Of Image That May Be Captured During The Rollers & Bee Eaters Of Bulgaria Photography Holiday
Join Alan & Georgi on an exciting photography excursion suited to wildlife enthusiasts, photographing two of the most colourful European birds – the Roller & the Bee-Eater. We have designed this tour for keen photographers who would like to focus on Rollers & Bee-Eaters but to have access to photograph some of the other species of birdlife found in Bulgaria.
Our trip has been timed to coincide with their mating period so you should have lots of opportunities to photograph behavioural activities such as courtship, mating, food transfer nest preparation etc.

You will be based in Belene, a small town located near the Danube River in north-central Bulgaria where you will spend 5 night. The days will consist of early starts & late evenings to take advantage of the best light. When you feel you have had your fill of Rollers & Bee-Eaters, you can take advantage of other opportunities such as photographing Lesser Gray & Red-backed Shrikes, Golden Oriole & other farmland & wetland birds.
We will also spend one day visiting a nearby island, to take opportunities to photograph Red-necked Grebe, Ferruginous Duck, Purple Heron & many more.

Working from dawn ’til dusk, with Alan & Georgi, watching & capturing images of this wonderful range of species in action, this is an experience you won’t want to miss!

The focus species of this trip is the atlantic puffin, & you will have abundant opportunities to observe & photograph these adorable birds as they thrive in their unspoilt island habitat.
Once home to Viking Warlords, the island of Fair Isle is now dominated by its wildlife population rather than its mere 70 inhabitants. This trip offers unrivalled access to an outstanding population of seabirds which live on the tiny island, & the isle’s status as an internationally renowned bird observatory gives an indication of the potential quality of wildlife opportunities. This trip is unique in that it is designed & led by photographers, for photographers, allowing us to work with you, ensuring that you obtain incredible images to treasure for years to come.
Fair Isle offers hugely varied conditions for photography, as the nature of fast-changing island weather means that in summer you could find yourself bathing in sunshine one moment, & shrouded in fog the next. Over the 5 days your images will benefit from varied lighting & weather conditions, with photography sessions covering dawn through to dusk. We have designed a flexible itinerary to allow photography of other native wildlife as well as landscape shots, giving photographers the chance to explore the island & make the trip their own.
Your NaturesLens guides will provide advice on composition, technique & species behaviour to enable you to achieve the best possible images, making the most of this rich & dramatic environment & the bustling activity of its residents. Fair Isle offers a unique opportunity to experience an environment truly ruled by its winged inhabitants, & group sizes must be kept small so book early to avoid missing out!

2017 02 20_10 04 20
NaturesLens invites you to spend this 14 night/15 day tour travelling throughout the wonderfully diverse landscapes of Japan, specifically Central Honshu & Northern Hokkaido, getting up close to a wide range of native species which thrive in harsh winter conditions. Our Japanese Winter Wildlife photography holiday, which we have been leading for the last 6 years, covers a variety of areas, providing you with unique opportunities to undertake wildlife photography of the highest quality.
Guided by David & Ian, you will visit Central Honshu & Northern Hokkaido & gain an insight into the variety of landscapes & wildlife which exists throughout the country, made even more photogenic by dramatic winter conditions. The photographic opportunities on our Japanese Winter Wildlife photography tour are always without parallel – with opportunities to photograph the red-crowned cranes, Steller’s sea eagles, white-tailed sea eagle, whooper swans, & of course, the Snow Monkeys, during this photography holiday.
Join NaturesLens to capture images of varied winter wildlife including the red-crowned cranes, Steller’s sea eagles, white-tailed sea eagle, whooper swans, & of course, the Snow Monkeys, in Japan, during the Winter Wildlife of Hokkaido & Japan photography holiday. This photography holiday is of 14 night/15 day duration on a Half Board, Non-Shared basis & costs £5749  £5175 per participant.
Join David & Ian to travel deep into stunning snow-covered landscapes, capturing beautiful images of wildlife which thrives during harsher seasons in Japan. Our group will travel throughout several different regions, including the mountainous area around Yudanaka in central Japan, & north of the mainland to the island of Hokkaido, giving you an insight into the variety of landscapes & wildlife which exists throughout the country, made even more photogenic by dramatic winter conditions.
Our trip offers enthusiastic wildlife photographers the opportunity to rise early for two dawn visits to the famous red-crowned crane roosting sites of the Tsurui region of Hokkaido; spend two days at the Akan red-crowned crane feeding centre; & spend two days observing the beautiful whooper swans which inhabit Lake Kussharo, a frozen caldera lake in the eastern region of Hokkaido.
Not only this, but our trip is unique in offering six boat trips on the drift ice of the Nemuro Strait to photograph Hokkaido’s fabulous Steller’s sea & white-tailed eagle populations as they fly, feed, dive for fish & fight over scraps. These excursions will give you unique access to the native wildlife at each location, providing ample opportunity to obtain incredible images.
Our tour begins in Tokyo; from there we immediately transfer to Hokkaido, the most northerly island of Japan, which holds the most remote & only true wilderness in Japan. North of the island, the Shiretoko Peninsula is recognised for its world heritage site status, as the landscapes of dramatic coastline & soaring mountains are stunning, giving you the perfect backdrop to achieve editorial quality images of the wildlife inhabitants. As we travel across the island, you will have the opportunity to photograph a vast selection of Japanese Winter Wildlife, including red-crowned cranes, black-eared kites, whooper swans as well as white-tailed & Steller’s sea eagles as we cruise through drift ice environments which surround the island & across additional feeding sites on the Nemuro Peninsula to the east of the island.
We will then move onward to Yudanaka & spend two days at the Jigokudani snow monkey site with the Japanese Macaque, also known as the Snow Monkey, in the mountains, at their thermal spa, as they bathe & feed in the area. We give you the second day here so that you have the chance to fine-tune your photography having become more familiar with the environment & the behaviour of this species. After spending the morning with the snow monkeys of Jigokudani Yaen Koen, we will travel to Lake Yamanaka.
Lake Yamanaka is a new location for 2020, & now the last stop on our Japanese Winter Wildlife photography holiday is Lake Yamanaka; Lake Yamanaka is located in the village of Yamanakako in Yamanashi Prefecture near Mount Fuji, Japan. Lake Yamanaka is the largest of the Fuji Five Lakes in terms of surface area, & is the highest of the Fuji Five Lakes in terms of elevation. Due to its high altitude & its relatively shallow water depth, Lake Yamanaka often freezes completely in the winter.
The view of Mt. Fuji across Lake Yamanaka is breathtaking with the mountain forming its distinctive shape – all making for an iconic image. From mid-October to February, a beautiful phenomenon called Diamond Fuji occurs when the rising or setting sun aligns with the peak of Mt. Fuji, causing Mt. Fuji to shine bright like a diamond, hence its name. Winter is actually the best season to see Mt. Fuji from this location as the weather conditions are more stable & the mountain is covered with snow.
Japan is an extraordinary country, & our Japanese Winter Wildlife photography holiday provides wildlife photographers with unrivalled opportunities to capture uniquely beautiful photographs.
Group size is limited to between 4 & 5 participants, this is due to the nature of the photography excursions & the type of hotel that we prefer to make use of, so booking early is essential.

Making use of an astonishing network of custom-built hides, which are spread throughout the property, you will be provided with the best bird photography moments possible, capturing birds in flight, within their habitats & interacting with one another.

Join NaturesLens to capture images of a truly immense selection of birds found on & around the estate of Laguna del Taray, in Spain, during the Spanish Birds of Toledo photography holiday. This photography holiday is of 7 night/8 day duration on a Full Board, Non-Shared basis & costs £2249 per participant.
A vast landscape, with a superb network of hides, the fantastic range of birdlife that co-exists within this estate to be found in the Castile-La Mancha region of Spain, all contribute to an experience not to be missed. This photographic holiday is one which will add many species to your photographic portfolio. From the splendid Goshawks & Harriers to the diminutive lesser kestrels, all living side by side in the local ecosystem, which exists in this region. Castile-La Mancha is the region of Spain within which the action of the famous Spanish novel Don Quixote of Cervantes takes place; it is a symbol of the Spanish culture with sunflowers, windmills & El Quijote.
Our Spanish Birds of Toldeo photography holiday provides you with a week packed with hide sessions, where your photography will benefit from unparalleled access to locations; the hides are situated strategically within the landscape to provide the best opportunity to photograph a stunning range of bird species.
Additionally, you will have at least two hide sessions devoted to the photography of the lesser kestrel colony, from conceivably the best duo of lesser kestrel hides that we have ever seen!
One morning will see you undertake a photography session dedicated to the goshawk, assuming that the species remains present on the estate, & a during the afternoon a further session devoted to photography of the harriers, buzzards & kites.
Two sessions will be devoted to photography from floating hides, these sessions are a lot of fun & allow for unique photos of birds on the water to be captured, however, should this not be for you, we will adjust your itinerary so that this activity is replaced with a different, but equally exciting, hide experience.
In addition, there are hides for little owl, for wading birds where the hides are sunken into the ground, hides for endemic birds at a drinking pool, hides amongst reed beds for bearded reedlings, reed buntings & more – you will be able to make use of all of these during your 7 night Spanish birds photography holiday.
The estate that we will make use of is found in the Province of Toledo & the Castile-La Mancha region, in the central part of the country, 100 km south of the capital Madrid.
The NaturesLens Spanish Birds of Toldeo photography holiday is a unique opportunity to photograph some of the estate’s varied & distinct birdlife, including various raptors, many of the indigenous Spanish species, plus of course the lesser kestrel colony &, hopefully, the Goshawk.
The beautiful landscape, filled as far as you can see with olive groves, offers keen wildlife photographers the ideal opportunity for capturing fabulous images of all the birdlife, but within the groves, particularly, we hope the little owl.
Accommodation is provided on a half-board basis – a light breakfast before heading to the hides & ending with a meal after the evening session in the hides. Everything is taken care of for you so that experiencing & photographing the species & their environment is all you need to consider.
This trip suits enthusiastic photographers with a passion to experience the magnificent birdlife that Toldeo has to offer; capturing editorial-quality images of a range of bird species to treasure for years to come. Places are minimal to ensure the best experience for every guest, so book early to avoid frustration.
One of the reasons that to date, NaturesLens had not featured the Goshawk on any Spanish photography holiday before this one was that all the locations that we found previously were “live-baited” … none of the species on the Spanish Birds of Toldeo photography holiday is live-baited; consequently, NaturesLens are now delighted to be able to offer Goshawk photography sessions to our clients.
Photographable Species: bearded reedling, bee-eater, black kite, blackbird, cetti's warbler, collared pratincole, common buzzard, common reed warbler, common sandpiper, crested lark, goshawk, great reed warbler, green sandpiper, hoopoe, iberian hare, iberian yellow wagtail, imperial eagle, jackdaw, kentish plover, kingfisher, lapwing, lesser kestrel, little grebe, little owl, magpie, marsh harrier, montagus harrier, moorhen, moustached warbler, nightingale, pallid harrier, pin-tailed sandgrouse, roller, savi's warbler, shelduck, spanish sparrow, spotless starling, starling, stone curlew, stonechat, tit, tits, tree sparrow, water rail, wild rabbit

2020 – Spring Birds of Lake Kerkini Photography Holiday

One Of The Squacco Herons Of Lake Kerkini Keeps A Wary Eye Out Photographed During The NaturesLens Spring Birds Of Lake Kerkini Photography Holiday
Lake Kerkini, in northern Greece, is a location already familiar to both the guests & guides of NaturesLens. For the last 5 years, Lake Kerkini has been the venue for our incredibly popular Dalmatian Pelicans photography holidays. Our new 6-day long Spring Birds of Lake Kerkini photography holiday leverages all that we have learnt about the area but visits the location during late-Spring, when the bird-life is prolific & new-life is occurring both on the lake & in the surrounding environs. Our tour is based at the same hotel close to the lake that we make use of for the winter visits, so we already know that the food & accommodation will be great. Similar to our winter visits, the rare Dalmatian & the more common White Pelican are to be found on the lake, but for this tour, our focus shifts to the impressive selection of nesting waterbirds on the lake, & also those in the lake-side environment, including hoopoe, little owl, bee-eater & more.
The Spring Birds of Lake Kerkini photography holiday begins with the group assembling at Thessaloniki Airport. You will be collected by our hosts & transferred to our super lakeside hotel which has real character. Based just 500m from the lake, you will stay here for 5 nights. Our tour includes full-board accommodation & meals are served in the superb restaurant, with specialities including oven-baked buffalo garnished with noodles or buffalo meatballs!
Join NaturesLens to capture images of Spring Birds & other wildlife of Lake Kerkini, in Greece, during the Spring Birds of Lake Kerkini photography holiday. This photography holiday is of 5 night/6 day duration on a Full Board, Non-Shared basis & costs £1749  £1599 per participant.
Over the next 4 days, you will be in a prime location with the best facilities to fully explore & capture images within this wetland paradise. Each morning, before sunrise, you will head out to the lake on a boat, during this time you will capture images of the multitude of waterbirds that make their homes within the waterside vegetation. In other areas of the lake, drowned trees reach skywards forming perches for cormorants & other bird-life that are happy to watch you as you drift by.
The bulk of afternoons will see the group split into pairs. We will have had hides set-up for a number of species, including, hopefully, bee-eaters, hoopoe & little owl, although this may change according to species availability. However, one afternoon will be spent on the boat until beyond sunset, hopefully capturing silhouette images of the birds against a suitably-coloured sky.
The Spring Birds of Lake Kerkini photography holiday suits keen photographers with a desire to experience the magnificent wildlife that this unique wetland has to offer; you will be able to capture editorial-quality images of a range of bird species that you will be proud to add to your portfolio. Places are highly limited to ensure the best experience for every guest, so book early to avoid disappointment.
