Upon arrival into San Jose International Airport, you will be transferred to a local hotel for an overnight stay, before a drive to Tortuguero the following morning. The afternoon & the entire next day will be spent exploring Tortuguero National Park. This national park is made up of a system of canals, rivers, lagoons, beaches, & dense rainforest. Tortuguero National Park is one of the rainiest parts of Costa Rica, which contributes to its rich biodiversity.
There are no roads in Tortuguero, so all the activities will be taken by boat along the jungle canals; a wide variety of birds can be seen within a small area. Hawks, falcons, sunbitterns, gulls, cuckoos, owls, & nighthawks are just some of the bird species that can be found within the park.
The following morning, you will transfer to Sarapiqui, with the afternoon spent capturing images of the birds that visit the lodge & a briefing on the activities of the following days. The next two days will be spent photographing the various frogs, snakes & hummingbirds that our local guides will locate for us in the Sarapiqui area, these will include the collared aracari, multiple types of hummingbird, the keel-billed toucan, various types of frog including glass frogs & the red-eyed tree frog plus much more. The third day will include use of another photography deck & a boat tour of the Sarapiqui River.
The final day of your stay in Sarapiqui will see the group visiting a location which generally produces excellent images of the Northern Emerald-toucanet there are often multiple toucanets at this location.
Leaving Sarapiqui, you will head towards the Nicaraguan border where you will stay for three nights; during the following days, you will visit locations for photography of the various Tanagers, Dacnises, Honeycreepers & Seedeaters that are found in the area, plus king vulture & hummingbird. Additionally, you will take a boat tour on the San Carlos river & visit the Reserva Maquenque.
On your last day, you will travel back to Juan Santamaría International Airport for your late afternoon flight home.
