2020 – Winter Raptors of Toledo Photography Holiday

A perched Hen Harrier on a golden winters morning photographed during the NaturesLens Winter Raptors of Toledo Photography Holiday
Join Dan in late January 2020 in the diverse landscape of the Castile-La Mancha region of Spain; you will spend many hours from dawn to dusk making use of a fantastic custom-built hide network to capture images of the raptors & other birds that call Laguna del Taray home during the winter months. Species that you may be able to photograph include Raptors such as Hen & Marsh Harriers, Buzzard, Red Kite, Goshawk, Bonelli’s Eagle & Common Kestrel. With the possibility of Golden and Imperial Eagles appearing occasionally; other species include Bearded Reedlings, Spanish Sparrow, Starlings, European Cranes, Iberian Grey Shrike, Little Owl & more.
Making use of an astonishing network of custom-built hides, which are distributed throughout the vast estate, you will be provided with the best winter bird photography opportunities possible, capturing birds in flight, within their habitats & interacting with one another.
As usual, our small group size ensures that you have excellent use of the hides, allowing you to capture dramatic images from the best angles, with photography guidance provided by Dan where needed.
A picturesque landscape, with a superb network of hides, the fantastic range of birdlife that co-exists within this estate found in the Castile-La Mancha region of Spain, all contribute to an experience not to be missed. As a counter to our summer holiday, which includes a vast number of species, this winter photographic holiday is one which will add some specialist species to any photographers portfolio.
During several days in January 2019, David captured images of Harriers, Bonelli’s Eagles, Goshawks, Buzzards & Kites, all living side by side in the local ecosystem. Also, dependent upon weather, there is the opportunity for crane photography on a magnificent pool with a dedicated hide or starling photography, from within a hide actually within the murmuration.
This Winter Birds of Toledo photography holiday provides you with 4 1/2 days packed with photography sessions, where your photography will benefit from unparalleled access to locations; the hides are situated strategically within this beautiful landscape to provide the best opportunity to photograph a stunning range of bird species.
We provide full-board accommodation – with this being on the estate itself, this means no travelling in the morning or the evening back to a hotel, plus all the food is catered for the group – a light breakfast before heading to the hides & ending with a meal after the evening photography session, with a lunch in between. Everything is taken care of for you so that experiencing & photographing the species & their environment is all you need to consider.
This trip suits enthusiastic photographers with a passion to experience the magnificent birdlife that the winter months on the estate surrounding Laguna del Taray offers; capturing editorial-quality images of a range of bird species to treasure for years to come.
Places are minimal to ensure the best experience for every guest, so book early to avoid frustration.
Photographable Species: bearded reedlings, bonellis eagle, buzzard, common kestrel, european crane, golden eagle, goshawk, hen harrier, iberian grey shrike, imperial eagle, little owl, marsh harriers, red kite, spanish sparrow, starling

A Close Up Of One Of The Golden Eagles Feeding In The Snow Image Captured During The NaturesLens Golden Eagles Of Swedish Winter Photography Holiday
Join NaturesLens on the edges of the snow-covered forests of northern Sweden to photograph the Golden Eagles of the Swedish Winter; spend 4 full-days in the hide observing breath-taking scenes as golden eagles soar & settle in their remote & unspoilt habitats, in the area surrounding Skellefteå. Robin Lowry will assist you in taking stunning photographs of this remarkable bird species, as well as others, with the dramatic mountainous & forested landscape providing the perfect backdrop. This is an extraordinary wildlife photography trip, designed with photographers in mind to ensure you are given the best experience possible.
Join NaturesLens to capture images of the Golden Eagles & other birdlife, in Sweden, during the Golden Eagles of the Swedish Winter photography holiday. This photography holiday is of 5 night/6 day duration on a Full Board, Non-Shared basis & costs £1599  £1499 per participant.
We invite you to join us between the dates of 3rd - 8th March 2020, & spend time within the forested wilderness of Sweden, photographing the indigenous golden eagles as they thrive in this wintery wonderland. Robin, a member of the NaturesLens guiding team, will provide assistance & guidance on an as-needed basis, assisting you in obtaining the best possible images. Photographing these impressive birds within stunning forested & mountainous landscapes, you will have opportunities to capture motion shots of the birds in flight, soaring above as they track prey, feeding, & resting within their protected habitats.
Alongside golden eagles live a wide variety of additional bird species; such as the northern bullfinch, jays & the grey-headed woodpecker, which you will also have the opportunity to capture on camera. The heavy snowfall we expect in this region during the time of our visit only makes the scenery more dramatic, providing an incredible backdrop for wildlife photography.
From the comfortable hides, which are new for the winter 2018/2019 season, you will have the chance to use both wide angle & close-up lenses, as the hides are placed in locations from which it is favourable to capture the eagles both at ground level & in the sky.
You will spend full days in the brand-new hides, making the most of the changing light conditions throughout the day to take the most spectacular photographs. The hides offer heating & comfortable interiors, therefore protecting you from the icy conditions outside while ensuring that your photography experience is both lucrative & enjoyable.

2020 – White-tailed Sea Eagles of Lithuania Photography Holiday

One Of The White Tailed Sea Eagles On The Snow Of A Frozen Pasture Photographed At The Locations Used For The NaturesLens White Tailed Sea Eagles Of Lithuania Photography Holiday
Visualise yourself visiting a location on a frozen pasture on the Nemunas Delta, accompanied by Alan Hewitt & Boris Belchev, with both singular birds & groups of 14-16 White-tailed Sea Eagles gathering in front of the photography hide in which you are sited. Your photographic opportunities are both abundant & presented directly in front of you; that is the nature of this White-tailed Sea Eagles of Lithuania Photography Holiday: seeing congregations of eagles is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the natural world.
The White-tailed Sea Eagles are not too wary of the hides, & due to the quantities that are attracted by the additional food that is placed out for them, they feel secure & will spend time in front of the hides, feeding, fighting, posing & more. The eagles vary in maturity & consequently behaviour, with the range from juvenile, through sub adult, to the awe-inspiring adult birds.
Join NaturesLens to capture images of the fabulous White-tailed Sea Eagles, in Lithuania, during the White-tailed Sea Eagles of Lithuania photography holiday. This photography holiday is of 5 night/6 day duration on a Full Board, Non-Shared basis & costs £1199  £1049 per participant.
The Nemunas Delta has a good breeding population of approximately 50 pairs of White-tailed Sea Eagles, &, generally, there are plenty of birds to photograph. With these eagles, you can expect exciting activity & action photography of this massive raptor; any gathering of eagles in these quantities invariably leads to fights over the additional food set out for them. If we are lucky enough to get snow for our visit, then the fighting can reach frenzied levels & leads to incredible photographic opportunities.
Each day, Alan & Boris (our local guide) will get you settled into the hide, light the gas heaters to warm the group, & will then provide any assistance you need to prepare for the day ahead. We would stress that from this point onwards, nobody is allowed to leave the hide under any circumstances until after dark for the reason noted above. It is anticipated that in total the group will spend approx 11-12 hours each day in the hide.
Cameras & lenses are moved into position & set up under cover of darkness, we then play a waiting game & get comfortable, anticipating the arrival of the eagles.
Previous years sessions conducted by our local guide have shown the general pattern of the day to be the White-tailed Sea Eagles visiting at first light, followed by several frantic hours of action before these birds depart mid-morning – on several days, however, the Eagles stayed virtually all day. In the absence of the White-tailed Sea Eagles, foxes & many other birds are present & provide photographic opportunities; these include raven, hooded crow, magpies, common gull, caspian gull, herring gull, greater black-backed gull & both grey heron & great white egret. Mid-afternoon generally sees the return of the White-tailed Sea Eagles for further feeding; again the action can be spectacular.
It should be noted that the White-tailed Sea Eagles activity is very dependent on the weather, the harsher the weather, the better the action is likely to be. Extreme weather is unlikely to be a problem in the heart of Nemunas delta in winter though unless we are incredibly unlucky.
As the sun sets & darkness falls, we are collected from the hide & driven back to our lodgings where an evening meal will be served.
Photographable Species: caspian gull, common gull, great white egret, greater blackbacked gull, grey heron, herring gull, hooded crow, magpies, raven, red fox, white-tailed sea eagle

2023 – Ice Grizzlies of the Yukon Photography Holiday

A Grizzly Bear Walking Through The Snow Captured During The Natureslens Ice Grizzlies Of The Yukon Photography Holiday
Join David & Pui Hang on a wild Canadian experience, travelling into the depths of Yukon wilderness in October 2023 to capture individual images of the native grizzly bear, also known as the Ice Grizzlies, as they feed on spawning salmon in the Fishing Branch River. The particular conditions & sub-zero temperatures in & around this river transforms the Grizzlies into ice bears, as their fur becomes frozen & frosted; effectively changing their appearance as photography subjects.
Only a fortunate few can witness this spectacle annually, & the unique nature of this wildlife photography experience means that we can only offer at most three places on this trip, so early booking is essential.
Join NaturesLens to capture images of native grizzly bear on the banks of the Fishing Branch river, in Canada, during the Ice Grizzlies of the Yukon photography holiday. This photography holiday is of 7 night/8 day duration on a Full Board, Shared basis & costs £9999 per participant.
NaturesLens invites wildlife photography enthusiasts on a trip to a national park deep in the Yukon region, Canada’s wildest & most unspoilt territory, to capture remarkable images of the Ice Grizzlies as they feed on spawning salmon. This natural wonder only occurs for six weeks of the year so the lucky few who get to observe this event will take home memories to treasure for years to come.
The area for this wildlife photography holiday lies within a snowball’s throw of the Arctic Circle in the Fishing Branch Protected Area, where the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation & the regional government have joined hands to set aside 2,500 sq. miles of pristine wilderness as Yukon’s largest regional park.
In this area of the Yukon the grizzly bears stay active for as long as the food remains viable – and late salmon runs mean food until mid-November.
The chum salmon draw the grizzly bears to the Bear Cave Mountain area. To prepare for denning, these magnificent giants of the forest take advantage of the abundant food supply as they enter Stage 4 of the process known as hyperphagia, which simply means they eat and drink excessively in preparation for denning. Every fall, in the shadow of craggy mountains, as many as 40 grizzly bears amble along the river’s banks, foraging their limit of chum salmon, which have journeyed two thousand kilometres from the Bering Sea to spawn and die. It is a sight to behold as the grizzly excels at fishing.
By mid-October, winter settles in at Bear Cave Mountain and, along with the winter elements, the Grizzlies are transformed into “Ice Bears”.
During November the frosty, satiated bears then head up Bear Cave Mountain to den in its numerous caves and crevices. A protective layer of fat enables the bears to rest in their dens for the winter, but as they do not truly hibernate, they can easily be awakened.
The period to witness this phenomenon is short, just six weeks long, in which the Grizzlies gather to feast on the spawning salmon. Their feeding behaviour is intense during this period as they are attempting to put on enough weight to last them through their hibernation in nearby limestone caverns over the winter months & the Fishing Branch River is the key to it all.
Fed by underground springs, Fishing Branch River remains unfrozen throughout the year, & every autumn 35,000 chum salmon make the 1,500-mile odyssey from the Bering Sea to spawn in its pure waters. At times there are so many fish in the river you feel you could walk across it on their backs without getting your feet wet.
The salmon, in turn, attract the Grizzlies, as many as 40 every season & as they wade through the river an extraordinary transformation takes place.
Within minutes their wet fur freezes in the sub-zero temperatures & they become Ice Grizzlies to the delight of wildlife photographers.
Being allowed into the park is a limited right, as the region is very sacred to the indigenous Vuntut Gwitchin communities who reside in the area, & put great ancestral & cultural value on the land & the environment within the park. The 2500sq miles which make up the park was set aside by the government & local communities as an area for preservation, & the opportunity to capture its rarely disturbed wildlife population on camera is not one to miss out on.
A guide with in-depth knowledge of the wildlife & culture of the Yukon national park, & in particular the Ice Grizzlies, will lead us throughout the experience,; both he & David & Pui Hang will assist you in obtaining editorial-quality images that genuinely communicate the magic of this remarkable wildlife spectacle.
Our trip includes a two hour chartered helicopter journey from Dawson City to Fishing Branch River, which takes us across a far-reaching emptiness of deep-frozen rivers & boreal forests bounded by range upon range of white mountains punching to the sky. You will also enjoy seven nights full-board accommodation in a charming log cabin situated moments from the bank of the river; involving you deeply in the action yet providing a cosy retreat from the harsh conditions outside.
All internal transfers, accommodation & meals at the camp are all included to make things as straightforward & enjoyable for you as possible.
As well as cabin accommodation, all internal transfers are taken care of for you, to ensure that the whole experience is gratifying & you can focus on capturing striking images of the fauna of Fishing Branch River to add to your wildlife portfolio.
Photographable Species: bald eagle, elk, grizzly bear, moose

2021 – Winter Wildlife of Hokkaido & Japan Photography Holiday

2017 02 20_10 04 20
NaturesLens invites you to spend this 14 night/15 day tour travelling throughout the wonderfully diverse landscapes of Japan, specifically Central Honshu & Northern Hokkaido, getting up close to a wide range of native species which thrive in harsh winter conditions. Our Japanese Winter Wildlife photography holiday, which we have been leading for the last 6 years, covers a variety of areas, providing you with unique opportunities to undertake wildlife photography of the highest quality.
Guided by David, you will visit Central Honshu & Northern Hokkaido & gain an insight into the variety of landscapes & wildlife which exists throughout the country, made even more photogenic by dramatic winter conditions. The photographic opportunities on our Japanese Winter Wildlife photography tour are always without parallel – with opportunities to photograph the red-crowned cranes, Steller’s sea eagles, white-tailed sea eagle, whooper swans, & of course, the Snow Monkeys, during this photography holiday.
Join NaturesLens to capture images of varied winter wildlife including the red-crowned cranes, Steller’s sea eagles, white-tailed sea eagle, whooper swans, & of course, the Snow Monkeys, in Japan, during the Winter Wildlife of Hokkaido & Japan photography holiday. This photography holiday is of 14 night/15 day duration on a Half Board, Non-Shared basis & costs £5749 per participant.
Join David to travel deep into stunning snow-covered landscapes, capturing beautiful images of wildlife which thrives during harsher seasons in Japan. Our group will travel throughout several different regions, including the mountainous area around Yudanaka in central Japan, & north of the mainland to the island of Hokkaido, giving you an insight into the variety of landscapes & wildlife which exists throughout the country, made even more photogenic by dramatic winter conditions.
Our trip offers enthusiastic wildlife photographers the opportunity to rise early for two dawn visits to the famous red-crowned crane roosting sites of the Tsurui region of Hokkaido; spend two days at the Akan red-crowned crane feeding centre; & spend two days observing the beautiful whooper swans which inhabit Lake Kussharo, a frozen caldera lake in the eastern region of Hokkaido.
Not only this, but our trip is unique in offering six boat trips on the drift ice of the Nemuro Strait to photograph Hokkaido’s fabulous Steller’s sea & white-tailed eagle populations as they fly, feed, dive for fish & fight over scraps. These excursions will give you unique access to the native wildlife at each location, providing ample opportunity to obtain incredible images.
Our tour begins in Tokyo; from there we immediately transfer to Hokkaido, the most northerly island of Japan, which holds the most remote & only true wilderness in Japan. North of the island, the Shiretoko Peninsula is recognised for its world heritage site status, as the landscapes of dramatic coastline & soaring mountains are stunning, giving you the perfect backdrop to achieve editorial quality images of the wildlife inhabitants. As we travel across the island, you will have the opportunity to photograph a vast selection of Japanese Winter Wildlife, including red-crowned cranes, black-eared kites, whooper swans as well as white-tailed & Steller’s sea eagles as we cruise through drift ice environments which surround the island & across additional feeding sites on the Nemuro Peninsula to the east of the island.
We will then move onward to Yudanaka & spend two days at the Jigokudani snow monkey site with the Japanese Macaque, also known as the Snow Monkey, in the mountains, at their thermal spa, as they bathe & feed in the area. We give you the second day here so that you have the chance to fine-tune your photography having become more familiar with the environment & the behaviour of this species. After spending the morning with the snow monkeys of Jigokudani Yaen Koen, we will travel to Lake Yamanaka.
Lake Yamanaka is a new location for 2020, & now the last stop on our Japanese Winter Wildlife photography holiday is Lake Yamanaka; Lake Yamanaka is located in the village of Yamanakako in Yamanashi Prefecture near Mount Fuji, Japan. Lake Yamanaka is the largest of the Fuji Five Lakes in terms of surface area, & is the highest of the Fuji Five Lakes in terms of elevation. Due to its high altitude & its relatively shallow water depth, Lake Yamanaka often freezes completely in the winter.
The view of Mt. Fuji across Lake Yamanaka is breathtaking with the mountain forming its distinctive shape – all making for an iconic image. From mid-October to February, a beautiful phenomenon called Diamond Fuji occurs when the rising or setting sun aligns with the peak of Mt. Fuji, causing Mt. Fuji to shine bright like a diamond, hence its name. Winter is actually the best season to see Mt. Fuji from this location as the weather conditions are more stable & the mountain is covered with snow.
Japan is an extraordinary country, & our Japanese Winter Wildlife photography holiday provides wildlife photographers with unrivalled opportunities to capture uniquely beautiful photographs.
Group size is limited to between 4 & 5 participants, this is due to the nature of the photography excursions & the type of hotel that we prefer to make use of, so booking early is essential.

This photography holiday is of 5 night/6 day duration on a Full Board, Non-Shared basis & costs £1599 per participant.
We invite you to join us between the dates of 5th - 10th March 2019, & spend time within the forested wilderness of Sweden, photographing the indigenous golden eagles as they thrive in this wintery wonderland.
Our Golden Eagles of the Swedish Winter Photography Holiday offers some exceptional photographic opportunities; designed & led by photographers for photographers to ensure that every element of the photographic adventure enables you to achieve images that you will be proud to add to your portfolio.
The Golden Eagles of the Swedish Winter Photography Holiday is led by Robin Lowry for NaturesLens. This photography holiday is offered on a full board, non-shared basis. Group size for this photography holiday is a minimum of 4 participants & a maximum of 6, plus Robin.
We consider this to be an experience with a comfortable level of exertion, if you have any questions about your suitability for this event, please contact us before making a booking enquiry. The photography holiday starts & ends at Skellefteå Airport.

2018 – Wildcats, Eagles & the Iberian Lynx of Spain Photography Holiday

A solo Iberian lynx in the Sierra Morena region of Spain - photographed during the NaturesLens Wildcats Eagles Iberian Lynx of Spain Photography Holiday
NaturesLens invites wildlife photographers of amateur & semi-professional ability to join them in escaping to the beautiful Andalusian town of Adamuz in Sierra Morena. Adamuz is a thriving hub of native species. The various mammals & avian species that co-exist in the area is incredible.
This is the same location that we make use of during our spring trip, Eagles & Raptors of Spain, but at the time of year that this trip is being run, our target species are something altogether different! You will spend four nights, five packed-full days taking the opportunity to spend time in hides, in cars & on foot, hopefully enabling the capture of stunning images of wolf, ibex, golden eagle, imperial eagle, wildcat & of course, the Iberian Lynx.
Join NaturesLens to capture images of Iberian Lynx, Wildcat & both Golden & Imperial Eagle, in Spain, during the Wildcats, Eagles & the Iberian Lynx of Spain past event. This past event is of 4 night/5 day duration on a Half Board, Non-Shared basis & costs £1499  £1399 per participant.
It has taken years to habituate the lynx & wildcat to the presence of the hides & we are very excited to be able to offer you the opportunity to capture all the target species within their habitats & interacting with one another.
With a selection of comfortable hides throughout the area at our disposal, we will provide you with the best photography opportunities possible.
Small group sizes allow you to capture spectacular images from the best angles, with photography guidance provided by Victoria, the accompanying guide from NaturesLens where needed.
This leads to facilitating stunning shots from the car for the wolves & each of the photographic hides that you will have access to. From the majestic Imperial Eagle to the small, but ferocious, wildcat, you should leave with some amazing photographs & experiences. To give the best chance of capturing award-worthy images, we include three hide sessions with the lynx; the Iberian Lynx is a naturally shy animal, but these hide sessions are proving to be extremely productive.
NaturesLens provides a trip of 5 days duration packed with photographic opportunities, where your photography will benefit from unrivalled access to hides, placed strategically within the landscape to provide the optimum opportunity to photograph species such as golden eagle, imperial eagle, kestrel, lynx & wildcat. You may even spot other species at some of the hides, including red fox & Egyptian mongoose.
This is a unique opportunity to photograph some of Spain’s most impressive, yet elusive species.
Accommodation is provided on a full board basis – from a light breakfast through to a 3-course dinner with a picnic lunch in between. Everything is taken care of for you so that experiencing & photographing the species & their environment is all you need to worry about.
This trip suits keen photographers with a desire to experience the magnificent wildlife that this region of Spain has to offer; capturing editorial-quality images of a range of both mammal & bird species to treasure for years to come. Places are highly limited to ensure the best experience for every guest, so book early to avoid disappointment.
