    British Mammals Nature Photography Workshop

[/is_singular] Our British Mammals Nature Photography Workshop is held in Devon at one of the locations made famous by the BBC programme “The Burrowers”. With its series of purpose built photographic & film sets with specially designed photographic access, we have unparalleled opportunities to photograph british mammals such as moles, otters, foxes, scottish wildcat, pine marten, polecat, harvest mice, water vole & weasel to name but a few.

Most of Britain’s mammals are extremely secretive & some are even nocturnal. This makes producing good images of our british wildlife in the wild challenging, with some species proving to be extremely elusive.

Due to the wide range of species available for photography in addition to the afternoon of Birds of Prey photography, this event is run as a two & a half days workshop. On the two days of mammals photography, we will return to some species on both days. The itinerary for each day is different & will be flexible to take into account changing weather conditions, availability of animals & group preferences.

The European pine marten is an animal native to Northern Europe belonging to the mustelid family, which also includes mink, otter, badger, wolverine & weasel. The body is up to 53 cm (21 in) in length, and its bushy tail can be 25 cm (10 in). Males are slightly larger than females. On average a marten weighs around 1.5 kg (3.3 lb). Their fur is usually light to dark brown and grows longer and silkier during the winter months. They have a cream to yellow coloured “bib” marking on their throats.

The European otter is a typical species of the otter subfamily. Brown above & cream below, these long, slender creatures are well-equipped for their aquatic habits. This otter differs from the North American river otter by its shorter neck, broader visage, the greater space between the ears and its longer tail. However, the European otter is the only otter in its range, so it cannot be confused for any other animal. Normally, this species is 57 to 95 cm (23–37 in) long, not counting a tail of 35–45 cm (14–18 in).

Scottish Wildcat photographed during NaturesLens British Mammals Nature Photography workshop

The Scottish wildcat is the largest in the wildcat family typically described as weighing 5-9kg (11-17lbs) with eighteen razor sharp retractable claws & rotating wrists for gripping prey & climbing trees & immensely powerful thigh muscles for 30mph sprinting. By appearance, they resemble a muscular domestic tabby, the coat is made up of well defined brown & black stripes & usually has a ruffled appearance due to its thickness. The fur around the mouth should always be light brown, not white. The gait is more like that of a big cat; the face & jaw are wider & more heavy set than the domestic cat. Most apparent is the beautiful tail; thick & ringed with perfect bands of black & brown ending in a blunt black tip, the dorsal stripe should end at the base of the spine & not continue onto the tail.
