Photograph Puffins & Jumplings (Guillemot Chicks)

[/is_singular] [su_promotional_box promo_link_text=”View” promo_link=”https://natureslens.co.uk/event/skomer-puffins-photography-holiday/” promo_content=”Whilst this event has passed, there is a puffins event for 2015 already available, you can secure a place on the NaturesLens Skomer Puffins Photography Holiday with a deposit of only £150, your balance will be due May 2015.”] Photograph puffin & jumplings (guillemot chicks) on the Farne Islands, located off the North Northumberland coast, on our special day & evening wildlife photography workshop. Designed to give you a full day out on & around the Farne Islands as well as an evening cruise where we will look out for the spectacle of fledging guillemot jumplings taking that leap of faith. As well as touring around the islands getting very close to the cliff face nests, we give you the maximum amount we can on each island – at least 2 hours on Staple Island & more on Inner Farne. This is more than you get with the usual trips.

Farne Islands – Day & Evening Wildlife Photography Workshop Details

This wildlife photography workshop will begin at 10am with a short safety briefing & code of conduct re wildlife. The emphasis is to get you out amongst the wildlife to spend as much time photographing as possible, therefore en route to the islands we’ll spend time giving you some group & individual tuition so you can get the best out of the day. Upon arrival on the islands, we’ll let you get on with photographing the spectacle.

Our first port of call is Staple Island. It is famed for its vast seabird colonies, especially those of the Auk family such as Guillemots, Razorbills & Puffins. The Island is an ornithologist’s & a bird photographer’s dream. For anybody who wants to get close to these birds, it’s an experience you’ll not forget. You will be able to get within inches of birds that are normally only seen from afar. The photograph at the top of most people’s wanted list is the immaculate puffin. Here, with a bit of patience you will take their photos with beaks full of sand eels. A wonderful sight. The colours of the Shag at close quarters are quite amazing.

Our second port of call is Inner Farne.  At 16 acres, this is the largest of the Farne Islands. In the Summer months it becomes home to many thousands of nesting seabirds including Puffins, Guillemots, Razorbills, Sandwich Terns, Common Terns, Roseate Terns, Arctic Terns, Shags, Cormorants & Eider Ducks. The Arctic Terns in particular offer the opportunity for fantastic flying shots.

There is a walkway round this island, & the National Trust have an Information Centre & public toilets. Please note, the National Trust levy a landing fee, currently £6.40 per island per person. Children cost £3.20 per island & families £16. If you are a National Trust member this is free.

We then return to harbour to partake of some dinner before re-embarking for our evening sunset cruise to look for guillemot jumplings.

Guillemots lay a single large egg on the bare rock. Almost everyone is a different in it’s colour & pattern, & this enables the birds to recognize the egg in the dense groups around the islands. It’s also round at one end & pointed at the other. The reason for this is because if one bird lands & hits the egg it just spins around in a circle which prevents it from falling of the cliff edge.

The chick hatches after 32 days & further 3 weeks or so on the breeding colony, being fed mainly on sand eels. One of most amazing things about guillemot chicks is that they ‘fledge’ when only part grown & flightless.

They are known as Jumplings as they jump of the cliff face before learning how to fly. The male guillemot waits for them in the water & then takes them to a place called The Dogger Bank, which is a large fishing ground. This happens mostly during dusk since they are trying to avoid predatory gulls so our evening sunset cruise is the ideal time to witness this amazing spectacle before returning to harbour around 9pm.

Please note that this wildlife photography workshop is a day & evening workshop. If you would like to photograph puffin on the Farne Islands without the evening cruise, please see our Farne Islands – Day Workshop
