Visualise yourself visiting a hide in central Poland, where large numbers of white tailed eagles gathering in front of the photography hides & the photographic opportunities are both abundant & presented in front of you, that is the nature of this NaturesLens White Tailed Sea Eagle Winter Photography Workshop & is surely one of the highlights of the natural world.
On previous visits to the hides, each & every morning our guides saw at least 15 white tailed eagles which gathered in front of the photographic hide. On one occasion, the morning yielded an incredible 31 eagles present! The eagles vary in maturity & consequently behaviour, with the range from juvenile, through sub adult, to the awe-inspiring adult birds .
The behaviour that singles out this site & makes the opportunities so special for White Tailed Sea Eagle winter photography, is that any gathering of eagles in these large numbers invariably leads to fights over the supplementary food put out for them. If we are lucky enough to get snow for our visit, then the fighting can reach frenzied levels, and leads to incredible photographic opportunities.
The NaturesLens White Tailed Sea Eagle Winter Photography Workshop largely adheres to the following itinerary:
Following an afternoon arrival at Warsaw airport, the group will be met by our hosts for the coming four days of eagle photography. Following a journey of approximately two hours for the transfer to the homely accommodation, the remainder of the late afternoon & evening is all about meeting the other members of the group and preparing for the days of photography that follow. An early night comes highly recommended, following the evening meal, the following four mornings are all early starts to be in the hides prior to sunrise with no return until sunset.
On the subsequent four days, the timetable is one of an early rise, so that the group can be moved to & settle into the hide(s) under the cover of darkness. The hide owners have devoted many years of hard work to ensure that the eagles visit the location & regularly feed, therefore it is absolutely vital that the eagles do not make any association between the food placed for them, and human beings.
Our driver & guide will get us settled into the hide, light the gas heater for us, & will then leave to allow us to prepare for the day ahead. We would stress that from this point onwards, nobody is allowed to leave the hide under any circumstances until after dark for the reason noted above. It is anticipated that in total the group will spend approx 11-12 hours each day in the hide.
Cameras & lenses are moved into position & set up under the cover of darkness, we then play a waiting game & get comfortable, anticipating the arrival of the eagles.
Previous visits, have shown the general pattern of the day to be eagles visiting at first light, followed by several frantic hours of action before these birds depart mid morning – on 2 of the 5 days however, the eagles stayed virtually all day. In the absence of the eagles, many other birds are present & provide photographic opportunities, these include raven, hooded crow, magpies, common buzzard & pheasant. Mid afternoon generally sees the return of the eagles for further feeding, again the action can be spectacular.
It should be noted that eagle activity is very dependent on the weather, the harsher the weather, the better the activity is likely to be. Harsh weather is unlikely to be a problem in the heart of Poland in winter though, unless we are incredibly unlucky!!
As the sun sets & darkness falls, we are collected from the hide & driven back to our hotel where an evening meal will be served.
Our final day sees a slightly later start & then a transfer to Warsaw airport for a homeward bound mid morning flight.
