There is no sight more impressive than that of a wild White-Tailed Sea Eagle diving then skimming the surface of a loch to catch a fish & that is exactly the photographic opportunity that this Mull-based wildlife photography workshop delivers.Mull Sea Eagle snatches a fish from the surface of a loch photographed on a NaturesLens wildlife photography workshop

Scotland’s Spectacular Seabirds – Wildlife Photography Workshop Details

The NaturesLens Sea Eagle Photography Workshop includes five trips to photograph these impressive birds, each trip is exclusive to our group, meaning that the space on the boat is more plentiful than if there were members of the public on the boat as well. We also include one trip to undertake puffin photography on the island of Lunga.

The puffins of Lunga are unafraid of people, & it is easy to creep to within a few feet of the nest openings. This makes it the ideal location for photography of these small seabirds. Many people are surprised to discover that the puffin is only about the size of a pigeon. Other birds nesting on Lunga include Kittiwakes, Guillemots, Razorbills & Shags. The latter tend to nest under cover in small caves or crevices beneath rocks, but the others gather in huge colonies on the sea stack on Lunga’s west side. The noise (& smell) is considerable, but well worth the half mile walk from the landing place.

Martin, the skipper of the Lady Jayne, who runs the white-tailed sea eagle trips, has many years of running them & is highly knowledgable on the area & it’s wildlife. He works with photographers onboard to provide the best experience he can & will align his boat to get the very best photographic opportunities.

As with many types of wildlife photography, one hopes that the wind, the weather & the birds all align to provide spectacular opportunities. When these three factors do converge & a White-Tailed Sea Eagle dive happens, the action is typically over in a fast & frantic matter of seconds.

The White-Tailed Sea Eagle is a very large bird. An individual typically measures 66 – 94cm in length with a 1.78 – 2.45m wingspan. The wingspan, with a midpoint of 2.18m , is on average the largest of any eagle. Females, typically weighing 4 – 6.9kg, are slightly larger than males, which weigh 3.1 – 5.4kg. The record weight for the species was 7.5kg for a specimen from Scotland, while a more recent huge female from Greenland reportedly spanned 2.53 m across the wings. Among standard measurements, the wing chord is 55.2 – 71.7cm, the tail is 25 – 33cm, the tarsus is 9.2 – 10.1cm & the exposed culmen is 6 – 6.5cm. The measurements of eagles from Greenland are in general larger than in other populations of the species. The White-Tailed Sea Eagle is sometimes considered the fourth largest eagle in the world & is on average the fourth heaviest eagle in the world. This species has broad “barn door” wings, a large head & a large thick beak. The adult is mainly grayish-brown except for the slightly paler head & neck, blackish flight feathers, & distinctive white tail. All bare parts are yellow in color, including both the bill & the legs. In juvenile birds, the tail and bill are darker, with the tail becoming white with a dark terminal band in sub-adults. The combination of mousy-brown coloration, broad, evenly-held wings, white tail, strong yellow bill & overall large size render the White-tailed Eagle essentially unmistakable in its native range. Some individuals have been found to live over 25 years, 21 years being the average.

Mull Sea Eagle snatches a fish from the surface of a loch photographed on a NaturesLens wildlife photography workshop

Our white-tailed sea eagle photography workshop is based in Salen on the island of Mull. Included is three nights accommodation at an excellent bed & breakfast, our hosts are the skipper of the boat that will take us on the eagle trips and his wife. Accommodation is on a twin room basis for the nights of Wednesday to Saturday (departing Saturday lunchtime after our last sea eagle trip) & includes breakfast for each of the mornings, (Thursday to Saturday).
Our package is inclusive of travel from Craignure Ferry Terminal to Mull late on the Wednesday afternoon or evening & we return you to the same location on the Saturday afternoon. We also include all transportation required during the workshop as a matter of course, meaning that all our participants have to concern themselves with is getting ‘the shot’.
If any participant wishes to undertake both of the experiences that we class as being truly outstanding and guaranteed to get the heart racing and the adrenalin flowing in Scotland, there is a trip which immediately precedes this to photograph the diving ospreys in Aviemore, more details are available to read here. This makes the Scottish trip a week long and truly unforgettable & has the added bonus of including a day of birds of prey photography as well.
