  • The Arctic fox is the only original land mammal in Iceland, having survived here for at least 12,000 years since the end of the last Ice Age. The fox has been aggressively hunted through the centuries, but on Hornstrandir they are completely protected from hunters & as a result, sightings are common.
Hornstrandir has been uninhabited since the 1950s. Completely off the grid, it is like going back in time, a hiker’s paradise where Mother Nature is the boss & the only way to access this hidden gem is by boat.
The nature reserve is a magical place of untouched beauty & wildlife. The sheer basalt mountains stretch from the sea to the sky chaotically divided by deep fjords, secluded alcoves & valleys. At the coastline, the relentless power of the ocean has moulded towering sea cliffs, richly populated by birds.
Join NaturesLens to capture images of the Arctic Foxes under the Midnight Sun on the island of Hornstrandir, in Iceland, during the Arctic Foxes of Hornstrandir photography holiday. This photography holiday is of 6 night/7 day duration on a Full Board, Shared basis & costs £1999 per participant.
Many of the alcoves & scurries off the coast are home to an abundance of seals. Inland, the crawling glaciers of the last ice age have hewn ancient mountain passes & lakes into the rugged peninsula. It is also home to the highest density of Arctic Foxes in the world. Here, the Arctic Fox can live & raise its young in peace, without fear of falling prey to hunters & habitat change. There are both white & blue morph in the valley, although the blue morph is more common.
There are different morph colours, including blue & brown. The blue morphs, almost a slate grey, are much rarer than the brown variety.
While you might think Arctic Foxes always turn white in winter, this isn’t always the case. In Iceland, only about 30% of foxes turn white, an adaptation made over generations in response to the foraging grounds on which they are typically seen.
The bright Icelandic summer night is the right time to see Arctic Foxes. The cute young cubs creep out into the open to play & explore the surrounding area while their parents hunt in the mountains or along the beach.
This is a unique opportunity to visit Hornstrandir, experience the midnight sun, learn about & feel the history of the area & see Arctic Foxes in their natural environment.

    Recommended Equipment

    Recommended Camera Equipment

For this photography holiday, we recommend that you bring the longest lens that you own whether this is a 400mm, 500mm or 600mm. If the longest lens you own is a 300mm lens but you have a 1.4x or 2.0 extender this would be suitable for our workshop. In fact, you should pack your extenders as this will allow you to further vary your focal length on this photography workshop.

You will also want a zoom such as a 100-400 or a 200-600, a shorter zoom such as a 70-200 may be useful, & you will want a wild angle for landscapes.

We recommend that you bring weather covers to protect your expensive lens from the weather in case it rains.

You should also pack a tripod that can go down low on the ground or beanbag to help steady your lens.

    Recommended Clothing

For this photography holiday, the weather can be changeable so we would recommend that you pack layers of thin fleeces or mid shirts & jumpers since you can remove items of clothing as you start to warm up. You don't need to bring camouflage clothes but please do pack neutral coloured clothes so that you blend into the landscape. You should also bring a warm waterproof coat & waterproof trousers in case it rains, so you are covered for all eventualities.

Silk gloves or a thin pair of thermal gloves with rubber grip on the fingers & palm will help to keep your hands warm. Silk gloves are great for wicking away moisture from your hands, leaving them dry & therefore lovely & warm. Gloves where the fingers are cut away so that you can operate your camera with them on would be a good substitute.

Don't forget to pack sensible waterproof walking boots & a warm hat to protect your head in case it is windy.
