  • Join David on a 14 night photographic tour to Ecuador where you will encounter locations renowned for having the highest diversity of birds in the world. The number of different bird species, especially Hummingbirds, is simply mind-boggling.
Ecuador means “equator” & it runs through this country attracting birds from both the northern & southern hemispheres. Some people refer to the climate in Ecuador as eternal spring, as there is little variation in the annual daily temperature, making the climate very comfortable. The Andes mountain range provides a variety of elevations for photo opportunities including beautiful valleys & majestic active volcanoes.
Our tour is designed to visit very safe tourist areas in the provinces of Pichincha, Napo & Orellana which are some of the best places for photography of hummingbirds & more species besides; we will be far away from the areas highlighted by the Foreign Office. Also, our local guide is always looking for new places to provide the best photography experience.
With 1600 different birds species, Ecuador is a mega-diverse country & one for the bucket list for any bird photographer.
Join NaturesLens to capture images of the amazing birdlife & wildlife of the various reserves of Ecuador, including the Sword-billed Hummingbird, the Cock-of-the-Rock, many different types of Tanager, Aracari, Toucan & many more., in Ecuador, during the Hummingbirds & more of Ecuador photography holiday. This photography holiday is of 14 night/15 day duration on a Half Board, Non-Shared basis & costs £6499  £6249 per participant.
You will be staying in lodges that are located close to the national & private reserves:
Our boutique hotel in Quito is an oasis surrounded by a variety of Andean species such as the Giant Hummingbird, Western Emerald, Scrub Tanager, Blue & Yellow Tanager & 35 other species. The beautiful flowers on the grounds provide an attractive hotspot for these birds, which makes it popular for nature lovers & photographers alike.
Our second lodge is located within a marvellous, private, ecological reserve of cloud forest. The area is renowned for its wealth of biodiversity that is rich in flora & fauna. Here you will spend several days looking for specialities such as the Sword-billed Hummingbird, Booted Tablet-Tail, Andean Guan, Masked Trogon, Ornate Flycatcher; mountain tanagers such as the Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager, Black-cheeked Mountain-Tanager & Hooded Mountain-Tanager & the colourful Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan.
There will be opportunities to photograph hummingbirds & more on feeders & visit a refuge famous for its rare birds such as the Cock-of-the-rock – yes, it is a bird – Rufous-fronted Wood-Quail, Yellow-breasted Antpitta, Moustached Antpitta, Ochre-breasted Antpitta & Choco Trogon.
You will spend a day at another reserve photographing rare & colourful birds such as the Toucan Barbet, Rufous-crowned Antpitta, Orange-breasted Fruiteater before moving on to the Amazon Rainforest.
Within this famous rainforest, you will see flocks of Oropendola, Aracari, Tanager & Euphonia as they roam the forest canopy in search of fruit. Plum-throated Cotingas glow from the treetops & raptors perch on vantage points to dry off in the morning sun while White-browed Purpletufts & Crowned Slaty Flycatchers sally for insects. If there is a fruiting tree nearby, you may even see numerous parrots & macaws fly by or drop-in, & many other species are flying past or through as you sit in the tower hide overlooking the forest.
You will also spend time in one of the best places for wildlife photography in the Ecuadorian Andes photographing birds of prey such as Andean Condor, Black-faced Ibis, Variable Hawk, Black-chested Buzzard Eagle, Carunculated Caracara & Curve-billed Tinamou.
Unlike our Costa Rica photography holidays, you will notice that we have no specific allocated day for Frog & Reptile photography, we can do macro photography in all the Lodges that we visit, our local guide will go out to capture amphibians and reptiles every night of the tour & we can undertake macro photography sessions during the afternoons & evenings. Depending on our guests, we can do multiple macro photography sessions at each lodge.
Our third lodge is located near the paramo & hot springs of Papallacta where seeing 14 species of hummingbird in an hour is not uncommon! Here, in this gorgeous Andean valley with towering crests & forest-blanketed slopes with trails that wind through beautiful habitats where orchids hang from mossy branches & black-&-chestnut Eagles still soar, you will find a fascinating selection of local species. This is also the best area to observe Mountain Tapir & the Spectacled Bear as well as Ecuadorian Hillstar, Rainbow bearded Thornbill & Tawny Antpitta, to name but a few species that may be found in this area.
Photographable Species: andean condor, andean guan, andean lapwing, andean potoo, aracari, beryl- spangled tanager, black tailed trainbearer, black- cheeked mountain-tanager, black-chested buzzard-eagle, black-faced ibis, blue gray tanager, blue tanager, blue-winged mountain-tanager, booted racket tail, carunculated caracara, chestnut breasted coronet, chocó trogon, club winged manakin, cock-of-the-rock, collared inca, crowned slaty flycatcher, curve-billed tinamou, ecuadorian hillstar, flame- faced tanager, giant hummingbird, glistening-green tanager, golden- collared honeycreeper, golden-crowned flycatcher, green- crowned woodnymph, green-and-rufous kingfisher, hoary puffleg, hooded mountain tanager, long tailed sylph, masked flowerpiercer, masked trogon, moss-backed tanager, moustached antpitta, ochre-breasted antpitta, orange-breasted fruiteater, ornate flycatcher, oropendola, plate-billed mountain-toucan, rainbow bearded thornbill, red crested cotinga, red headed barbet, redbellied macaw, rufescent tiger-heron, rufous bellied seedsnipe, rufous motmot, rufous-breasted antthrush, rufous-crowned antpitta, rufous-fronted wood-quail, saffron finch, sapphire-vented puffleg, scarlet- bellied mountain-tanager, scrub tanager, shining sunbeam, sparkling violetear, strong-billed woodcreeper, sungrebe, sword-billed hummingbird, tawny antpitta, tawny-bellied hermit, torrent duck, toucan barbet, turquoise jay, tyrian metaltail, variable hawk, velvet-purple coronet, vermilion flycatcher, violet-tailed sylph, white bellied woodstar, white capped dipper, white- necked jacobin, white-browed purpletuft, white-whiskered hermit, yellow tanager, yellow-breasted antpitta

    Recommended Equipment

    Recommended Camera Equipment

For this photography holiday, we would recommend that you bring along a wide angle lens such as the 16-35mm or 17-40mm, a 300mm & 500mm lens. An intermediate telephoto lens such as the 70-200mm or 100-400mm would also be very useful, especially while you are out on safari. It is essential that you pack a wide angle lens if you want to do photography in the overnight hides.

If you own a lens with an aperture of f/2.8 within the recommended focal length, bring it! These will allow you to focus on your subject faster & will also be useful in low light conditions.

There are tripods with gimbal heads provided in the hides but you should pack your own tripod for the astro photography session.

    Recommended Clothing

For this photography holiday, we recommend that you pack thin neutral coloured t-shirts & blouses teamed with neutral coloured long trousers for the game drives & dark coloured long sleeved t-shirts & blouses for when you are in the hides. You should also bring a hat, preferably a safari style hat with a broad rim all around the edge, to protect your head & scalp from getting burnt whilst you are out on safari. The early mornings & late afternoons can be cool so be sure to bring a warm fleece with you.

For the overnight hide, you will also need to pack black silk gloves & a black hat or scarf to cover your head if you do not have dark hair. This is to prevent reflections in the glass while you are photographing from this hide.

Sandals or easy shoes are great for the lodge but you will need sensible shoes for when you are out & about.

Don't forget to pack your sunglasses, plenty of sunscreen & insect repellent!
