What is a Lammergeir?
The Lammergeier, or Bearded Vulture, is an impressive bird of prey found in many habitats, stretching across sizeable portions of Europe, Africa, & Asia. They are primarily carnivorous, & have several identifying characteristics, including their black & yellow feathers, large wingspan, & hooked beaks.
Where is the Lammergeier found?
Regarding its geographic range, the Lammergeier is most commonly found in mountainous regions, such as the Alps, Pyrenees, & Carpathian Mountains. They also inhabit large expanses of sub-Saharan Africa, stretching from Egypt & Morocco in the north to South Africa, Botswana, & Namibia in the south. They can also be spotted in parts of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, & Tajikistan.
These magnificent birds typically build large nests wherever they are found at high elevations. They prefer to live in open & barren areas, away from human contact, which makes them difficult to observe & study. Nevertheless, recent research has helped to further an understanding of Lammergeier behaviour & biology, enabling us to appreciate & protect this captivating species.
There are four species of Vulture in Spain; the most frequently encountered is the Griffon vulture, but in addition, Spain is home to the Egyptian Vulture, the Black Vulture & of course, the Lammergeier.
