Imagine a puffin colony with the addition of the midnight sun so stunning that fabulous silhouette shots should be in the bag & with hospitality on a tiny island which is about twice the size of Skomer – that is what this Puffins of the Arctic Circle photography holiday offers you.
After a flight to Reykjavik & then onwards to Akureyri, the group will assemble in Akureyri & stay in a hotel in the town for the night.
The following day will see you transfer to Grímsey Island, where your adventure really begins. Lying 25 miles (40 km) north of “mainland” Iceland in the immense & turbulent North Atlantic, Grímsey Island attracts vast numbers of seabirds to nest on its cliffs – including tens of thousands of highly photogenic Atlantic puffins. Though the island is packed with birds, the tourists are few, & tourist facilities are scarce.
Grímsey Island is the northernmost populated Icelandic territory, just 5 square kilometres with around sixty residents & is located on the Arctic Circle. The North Atlantic current brings some warmth from the Gulf of Mexico, promoting a surprisingly mild climate despite its northern position.
Join NaturesLens to capture images of Puffins of the Arctic Circle, in Iceland, during the Puffins of the Arctic Circle photography holiday. This photography holiday is of 7 night/8 day duration on a Full Board, Shared basis & costs £2199per participant.
Atlantic Puffins are easily photographed at many locations almost any time of day. Fulmars, Guillemots, Razorbills & Kittiwakes nest on these same cliffs. There is a colony of Arctic Terns directly outside our guest house. Guillemots nest & fish in the lovely harbour & Red-necked Phalaropes dart around the village pond. Likewise vying for your photographic attention are the nesting Oystercatchers, Sandpipers, Plovers, Wagtails, Wheatears & Buntings, which are all widely distributed across the island.
As shown above, there is also a charming lighthouse & church, distant snow-covered mountain backdrops, & a small number of photogenic Icelandic horses. Hiking around Grímsey Island only takes around an hour & there are plenty of exciting views to photograph.
Soaring cliffs surround Grímsey Island & the southwest side features magnificent basalt columns. The vegetation is abundant & consists of marshland, grass & moss. Thousands of seabirds live on the island, such as white wagtails, snow buntings, kittiwakes, razorbills, guillemots, & an abundance of puffins & terns. Seals & whales may also be found in the vicinity.
Grímsey Island has become widely regarded as one of the best places in Iceland to photograph puffins & one of the very best places in the world to photograph puffins in flight.
The property in which we will be staying on Grímsey is ideally located close to the bird cliffs. It is clean, simple & guests will have their room to themselves. Basing the workshop on the island for six days & 5 nights will give participants the freedom & flexibility to photograph wherever, whenever, & whatever they choose during the 22 hours of daylight that will be available each day.
We have arranged to take the whole house for our group & we have planned our trip to coincide with the start of the Atlantic puffin nesting cycle.
Grímsey Island is the only place in Iceland located on the Arctic Circle. The seascapes, including an array of wildflowers, are fabulous & the dramatic Arctic light makes for some superb, creative photography.
Grímsey Island offers excellent scenery for photographing, & standing at the 66th parallel, enjoying the benefits provided by the light & hues of the Midnight Sun is an experience that any serious photographer should not miss.
Please note that Grimsey is a remote island with one restaurant & only a couple of guest houses, walking from location to location is the norm for this photography – this could be up to 7km per day – this is not dissimilar to our Fair Isle or Skomer photography holidays, if you have any mobility issues, health issues or are averse to walking, then neither this nor the Fair Isle or Skomer photography holidays are suitable for you.
The guesthouse is clean, but facilities are shared – this along with the sole restaurant on the island – have been described as basic but functional, we hasten to remind you that this is a remote island with a tiny population.
This trip gives individuals the chance to experience ‘off the grid’ living; to really escape from the modern world, relax, & become immersed within this unique & remote environment.

Recommended Camera Equipment
For this photography holiday, we would recommend that you have available, an array of lenses from an intermediate telephoto lens such as the 70-200mm or 100-400mm, which is extremely versatile, through to your longest lens, whether that is a 400mm, 500mm or 600mm. A wide angle would also be useful if you fancy capturing some birds in the environment shots.
If you own a lens with an aperture of f/2.8 within the recommended focal length, bring it! These will allow you to focus on your subject faster & will also be useful in low light conditions.
You should also pack a tripod to help steady your lens, especially when you are out photographing at dawn & dusk
For this photography holiday, the weather can be changeable so we would recommend that you pack layers of thin fleeces or mid shirts & jumpers since you can remove items of clothing as you start to warm up. You don't need to bring camouflage clothes but please do pack neutral coloured clothes so that you blend into the landscape. You should also bring a warm waterproof coat & waterproof trousers in case it rains, so you are covered for all eventualities.
Silk gloves or a thin pair of thermal gloves with rubber grip on the fingers & palm will help to keep your hands warm. Silk gloves are great for wicking away moisture from your hands, leaving them dry & therefore lovely & warm. Gloves where the fingers are cut away so that you can operate your camera with them on would be a good substitute.
Don't forget to pack sensible waterproof walking boots & a warm hat to protect your head.
