  • A more condensed tour than our regular offering to Costa Rica, our Wildlife Highlights of Costa Rica photography holiday has been designed to give you an opportunity to photgraph the iconic species & additionally include a new area not covered on our usual tour.
Join NaturesLens to capture images of Wildlife Highlights of Costa Rica, in Costa Rica, during the Wildlife Highlights of Costa Rica photography holiday. This photography holiday is of 11 night/12 day duration on a Half Board, Non-Shared basis & costs £3249  £2999 per participant.
Upon arrival into San Jose International Airport, you will be transferred to a local hotel for an overnight stay, before a drive to Tortuguero the following morning. The afternoon & the entire next day will be spent exploring Tortuguero National Park. This national park is made up of a system of canals, rivers, lagoons, beaches, & dense rainforest. Tortuguero National Park is one of the rainiest parts of Costa Rica, which contributes to its rich biodiversity.
There are no roads in Tortuguero, so all the activities will be taken by boat along the jungle canals; a wide variety of birds can be seen within a small area. Hawks, falcons, sunbitterns, gulls, cuckoos, owls, & nighthawks are just some of the bird species that can be found within the park.
The following morning, you will transfer to Sarapiqui, with the afternoon spent capturing images of the birds that visit the lodge & a briefing on the activities of the following days. The next two days will be spent photographing the various frogs, snakes & hummingbirds that our local guides will locate for us in the Sarapiqui area, these will include the collared aracari, multiple types of hummingbird, the keel-billed toucan, various types of frog including glass frogs & the red-eyed tree frog plus much more. The third day will include use of another photography deck & a boat tour of the Sarapiqui River.
The final day of your stay in Sarapiqui will see the group visiting a location which generally produces excellent images of the Northern Emerald-toucanet there are often multiple toucanets at this location.
Leaving Sarapiqui, you will head towards the Nicaraguan border where you will stay for three nights; during the following days, you will visit locations for photography of the various Tanagers, Dacnises, Honeycreepers & Seedeaters that are found in the area, plus king vulture & hummingbird. Additionally, you will take a boat tour on the San Carlos river & visit the Reserva Maquenque.
On your last day, you will travel back to Juan Santamaría International Airport for your late afternoon flight home.

Please note that if you are a travelling couple or a pair of friends who will book at the same time & share a twin room, you can book places on this tour for £2599 per participant!

All images used on this page have been taken by recent participants on our tours to Costa Rica – they are representative of the photographic opportunities that are made available to our guests.

    Recommended Equipment

    Recommended Camera Equipment

For this photography holiday, we would recommend that you have available, an array of lenses from a macro lens, an intermediate telephoto lens such as the 70-200mm or 100-400mm, through to your longest lens, whether that is a 400mm, 500mm or 600mm. A wide angle would also be useful if you fancy capturing some environment or landscape shots.

If you own a lens with an aperture of f/2.8 within the recommended focal length, bring it! These will allow you to focus on your subject faster & will also be useful in low light conditions.

You should also pack a tripod to help steady your lens, especially when you are out photographing at dawn & dusk. Last but not least, don't forget to pack a flash or lighting unit.

    Recommended Clothing

For this photography holiday, we recommend that you pack neutral coloured t-shirts teamed with neutral coloured trousers & a hat to protect your head from the sun. January is the best time to visit Costa Rica as it is the dry season with maybe a little rain in the afternoon or evening showers. For this reason, you should also bring a waterproof jacket & waterproof trousers so you are covered for all eventualities. A fleece would also be useful for the cool evenings.

Sandals or easy shoes are great for the hotel but you will need sensible shoes for when you are out & about.

Don't forget to pack your sunglasses, plenty of sunscreen & insect repellent!
