  • NaturesLens offer keen wildlife photographers the chance to join Victoria & take opportunities with the White-tailed Sea Eagles of Smøla; Smøla has the highest breeding density in the world for this species; you will spend 5 nights capturing images of the population of this species as they thrive in their picturesque natural habitat, both on land & above the frozen waters that surround the island.
Smøla is the 19th largest island in Norway; the island lies to the north of the Edøyfjorden & the west of the Ramsøyfjorden, 16 miles north of the town of Kristiansund. The islands of Hitra & Frøya lie to the northeast, Skardsøya & Ertvågsøya to the southeast, Stabblandet & Tustna to the south, & the open Norwegian Sea to the west & north.
In addition to White-tailed Sea Eagles, this period is perfect for wintering sea birds like auks, eiders, velvet scoter, long-tailed duck & cormorants.
Join NaturesLens to capture images of White-tailed Sea Eagles, in Norway, during the Winter’s White-tailed Sea Eagles of Norway photography holiday. This photography holiday is of 5 night/6 day duration on a Full Board, Non-Shared basis & costs £2399 per participant.
We have designed an all-encompassing photography experience, ensuring that internal travel & comfortable accommodation are organised for you to ensure that you can focus on making the most of opportunities to capture editorial quality images. Our trips fill up quickly to ensure that you book early to avoid missing out!
The white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) is an enormous eagle widely distributed across Eurasia. As are all eagles, it is a member of the family Accipitridae (or accipitrids) which includes other diurnal raptors such as hawks, kites, & harriers. One of up to eleven members in the genus Haliaeetus, which are commonly called sea eagles, it is not infrequently also referred to as the white-tailed sea-eagle.
This trip is best suited to those of you with mid-level to advanced photography skills looking for a new challenge. We pride ourselves in offering something unique to clients in comparison to other trip providers, so we have coordinated this itinerary to allow you to capture these magnificent birds at sunrise & sunset.
Highlights of the trip include alternating days between boat trips on to the frozen waters to photograph the White-tailed Sea Eagles in the best light available as the swoop & dive above the seas, & two days capturing images from a hide offering you the chance to get up close to these magnificent birds & witness their feeding behaviours. Cosy accommodation nearby provides an oasis from the harsh winter conditions. All the details are taken care of for you so that you can relax & enjoy this unique wildlife photography adventure.
The boat trips are conducted on a specially designed boat with sides that can be lowered, this allows for photography just a few centimetres above the water-line; whilst the hide, shown in the photo above, has been sunken into the ground next to an eagle drinking pool with medical-grade clarity glass, heating & a toilet.
Victoria, one of our photography guides, will lead you throughout this photography tour, providing guidance & advice as needed & helping you develop your skills. They will help you capture images of the White-tailed Sea Eagles in wide-angle & close up shots; capturing them in movement while feeding & fighting for fish, interacting with each other or in-flight with the impressive backdrop provided by the sea & surrounding snow-laden landscapes.

    Recommended Equipment

    Recommended Camera Equipment

For this photography holiday, we would recommend that you have available, an array of lenses from an intermediate telephoto lens such as the 100-400mm, through to your longest lens, whether that is a 400mm, 500mm or 600mm. If the longest lens you own is a 300mm lens but you have a 1.4x or 2.0 extender this would be suitable. In fact, you should pack your extenders as this will allow you to further vary your focal length on this photography holiday. A wide angle would also be useful if you fancy capturing some environment shots.

If you own a lens with an aperture of f/2.8 within the recommended focal length, bring it! These will allow you to focus on your subject faster & will also be useful in low light conditions.

    Recommended Clothing

On this photography holiday, you may experience extreme cold & even sub zero weather conditions, when outside of the hides, so we recommend that you pack the following items of clothing for extreme comfort, or if you are susceptible to the cold.

You will need plenty of warm & weatherproof clothing. Layering is key to keeping warm in extreme cold conditions so thermal underwear & undershirts coupled with thin jumpers, micro-fleece with a wind & waterproof down coat is best. For your lower half you will need thermal leggings & winter lined trousers coupled with good waterproof over trousers. Black salopettes would also work.

To protect your hands, you should pack silk gloves or a thin pair of thermal gloves with rubber grip on the fingers & palm under ski gloves will help to keep your hands warm. Gloves where the fingers are cut away so that you can operate your camera with them on would be a good substitute for ski gloves.

If you don't have a hood on your coat, you should pack a warm hat to protect your head & a balaclava or snood to protect your face from the wind. This is especially important while you are out on the boat for the sea eagles. We also recommend that you bring a good pair of snow or thermal boots with a good sole for walking on snow & ice.
