  • Yellowstone National Park is home to the largest concentration of wildlife in the lower 48 states & when winter hits, the Park transforms into a picturesque winter wonderland, complete with snowy woods, ice pellets of geyser rain & frozen waterfalls.
Whilst some of the Wildlife of Yellowstone in Winter, notably the bears hibernate, bison, elk, moose, mule deer, wolves, foxes & coyotes roam the Park as the cold & wind drive them down from the high ridges to forage & hunt for food in the open meadows near the road.

WHAT WILDLIFE CAN YOU SEE IN YELLOWSTONE IN WINTER?

We hope to observe & photograph Bald Eagle, Bison, Coyote, Elk, Moose, Wolf & much more besides, all with the impressive backdrop provided by the surrounding snow-capped landscape.
Join NaturesLens to capture images of Yellowstone's wonderful wildlife in Winter, in United States, during the Wildlife of Yellowstone in Winter photography holiday. This photography holiday is of 10 night/11 day duration on a Half Board, Non-Shared basis & costs £7499 per participant.
We will spend three full days exploring the interior of Yellowstone. During these days, we will travel by snow coach & the primary focus will be on the wildlife of Yellowstone, such as bison, coyotes, red foxes, Trumpeter Swans, otters & bobcats.
However, no trip to Yellowstone in Winter would be complete without a trip to see Old Faithful, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone & other geyser basins.
On day five, we transfer to Gardiner, which will be our base for the remainder of the trip.
We will explore Gardiner & the Lamar Valley for the next four days, looking for Bald Eagle, Bison, Coyote, Elk, Moose, Pine Marten, Wolf, Bighorn Sheep, Otter, Red Fox, Stoat.
If we are lucky, we may even see foxes “mousing”.
The Lamar Valley is one of the best places in the world to see grey wolves. During the winter, the snowy landscape acts as a blank canvas for quickly spotting their dark shapes as they move across the hills & valleys.
Yellowstone National Park in winter is a truly magical place with opportunities to capture images of some stunning landscapes &the fantastic wildlife that call the Park their home.
For this ten-night tour, we have joined forces with Adam Brubaker of Tied to Nature, a long-time provider of some of the best winter tours in Yellowstone. Adam is a resident of Idaho & spends his entire year dedicated to the wildlife of the Yellowstone ecosystem; he has been providing Yellowstone winter tours for many years.
In addition to Adam, throughout this photography holiday, David & Pui Hang, the co-founders of NaturesLens, will be on hand to guide & lead you; David & Pui Hang will be providing assistance & advice as needed & helping you develop your skills. Recommended Equipment

    Recommended Camera Equipment

For this photography holiday, we would recommend that you have available, an array of lenses from an intermediate telephoto lens such as the 70-200mm or 100-400mm, through to your longest lens, whether that is a 400mm, 500mm or 600mm. If the longest lens you own is a 300mm lens but you have a 1.4x or 2.0 extender this would be suitable. In fact, you should pack your extenders as this will allow you to further vary your focal length on this photography holiday. A wide angle would also be useful if you fancy capturing some environment shots.

If you own a lens with an aperture of f/2.8 within the recommended focal length, bring it! These will allow you to focus on your subject faster & will also be useful in low light conditions.

You should also pack a tripod to help steady your lens, especially when you are out photographing at dawn & dusk.

    Recommended Clothing

On this photography holiday, you may experience extreme cold & even sub zero weather conditions so we recommend that you pack the following items of clothing for extreme comfort, or if you are susceptible to the cold.

You will need plenty of warm & weatherproof clothing. Layering is key to keeping warm in extreme cold conditions so thermal underwear & undershirts coupled with thin jumpers, micro-fleece with a wind & waterproof down coat is best. For your lower half you will need thermal leggings & winter lined trousers coupled with good waterproof over trousers. Black salopettes would also work.

To protect your hands, you should pack silk gloves or a thin pair of thermal gloves with rubber grip on the fingers & palm under ski gloves will help to keep your hands warm. Gloves where the fingers are cut away so that you can operate your camera with them on would be a good substitute for ski gloves.

If you don't have a hood on your coat, you should pack a warm hat to protect your head & a balaclava or snood to protect your face from the wind. This is especially important while you are out on the boat for the sea eagles. We also recommend that you bring a good pair of snow or thermal boots with a good sole for walking on snow & ice.

For the Snow Monkeys, we recommend bringing a pair of snow studs or spikes. They don't need to be elaborate, just something to give you extra grip on the icy paths surrounding the thermal spa.
