Porcupine at Shompole

Tucked into southern Kenya's Rift Valley, Shompole sits close to the Tanzanian border and within sight of the dramatic Nguruman Escarpment, its forested slopes rising sharply above the surrounding acacia woodland. This community-conserved wilderness offers a quiet, undisturbed setting well suited to seeking out porcupines, best attempted in October when our Wildlife of Shompole Wilderness holiday visits the area. Patience is rewarded here, as the acacia woodland and escarpment terrain provide plenty of cover for a species that keeps largely out of sight. Photographers joining this trip should come prepared for careful, considered fieldcraft in this remote corner of the Rift Valley.
