An Osprey Perched On The Very Top Of One Of Cypress Trees Photographed On The NatureLens Ospreys Of Blue Cypress Lake Photography Holiday

In April 2016, I was lucky enough to lead a group of clients & friends to Florida on the NatureLens Ospreys of Blue Cypress Lake Photography Holiday, our main target – rather obviously – the ospreys, that have made the cypress trees that have grown on the banks on Blue Cypress Lake their home.

This is the 1st of several posts in which I will publish images of some of the wildlife that I was lucky enough to photograph on the week-long trip.

During the 7 days that the trip took place over, we ventured out onto the lake every morning prior to sunrise, returning 4 hours later when the light became too harsh for photography.

It was evident that although a large number of osprey chicks had already hatched, the need for nesting material was still vast, with many birds returning to nests with large amounts of material to build or line the nest with.

At the beginning of the week, the osprey chicks were barely tall enough to see over the edge of the nest, within the next 7 days, after being fed each day with fish caught by both the parents, the chicks were large enough for us to clearly observe them & their behaviour.

The sheer number of ospreys – there must be a nest in every other tree – coupled with the number of chicks demanding to be fed, lead to a constant back & forth of adult birds, heading out then returning with freshly caught fish, of a number of varieties, to feed their ravenous young.

Big thanks to Fabiola & Alfred, who were a great help with information when I was initially setting the trip up.

It is my intention to return to Florida & the Ospreys of Blue Cypress Lake in April 2019, for a follow-up trip; as well as the ospreys & the birds of the rookeries, we will be seeking out opportunities with barred owls in the late afternoon – & have dedicated an additional 2 days to photography of Cape Coral’s Burrowing Owls.

Val was amongst the small group that visited Skomer Island with Daniel in mid-July, although they had challenging weather on a couple of the days, one evening yielded super golden light, & the group certainly made the most of the opportunity to capture subtly lit images of the Atlantic Puffins, after all, that is what they went for.

One of the main reasons for staying on Skomer Island is the opportunity to shoot in golden light after the day trippers have left the island. But if the weather is kind, the opportunities carry on beyond the golden light period for another short session when even more creative Puffin images can be achieved.

Sean sent us in a few examples of some the creative puffin images that he has been able to achieve at the end of the day from his recent stay on the island.

Staying on Skomer Island for three nights means there will be plenty of opportunities to capture images like these with the help of Sean & Kevin.

WOULD YOU LIKE VISIT SKOMER FOR SOME PUFFIN PHOTOGRAPHY & STAY ON THE ISLAND?

Skomer is one of the most important locations for the colonies of Atlantic Puffins in Europe & it is easy to see why. For photographers keen to add puffin images captured in different conditions & lighting to their wildlife portfolio, a three night stay on the island provides an abundance of opportunities. Our focus during the NaturesLens photography holidays are the comical puffins, which can be seen on Skomer in abundant quantities from mid-May through to July.

Our second 2017 Skomer Puffins Photography Holiday, is proposed to be held in July, over the dates of July 15 – 18, 2017, some places still remain available on this trip, all bookings have to be confirmed by the end of September, but these trips normally sell out well in advance of the end of sale date.

As announced elsewhere, Sean Weekly is joining the team at NaturesLens & his first leading duties with us are in October 2016, with the rutting red deer workshops, but next summer, he will be  co-leading the regular Skomer puffin photography trips that we run to Skomer Island, off the coast of Pembrokeshire in Wales.

The focus of these holidays is obviously the comical clowns of the sea, as such, we thought that our blog readers might like to see some of Sean’s Skomer puffin photography portfolio. He visited twice in the summer of 2016 & has sent us a good selection of images for us to publish here in this blog post.

Part of the charm of staying on Skomer Island is the possibility of photographing the comical puffins in golden light. Once the day-trippers have left, our guests have the entire island to themselves. Plenty of opportunities to experiment with light & try something a little bit more creative …

As the light starts to fade, more & more puffins fly inland in search of their burrows leading to opportunities to capture images such as backlit puffins in flight, landing shots, silhouettes or even something very different.

Sean Weekly, the newest member of our team will be co-leading our Skomer Puffins Photography Holiday in July 2017 with team veteran, Kevin Morgans. He has recently returned from Skomer & his images are a great example of the sort of images you could achieve during the magical “golden hour” on the island.

Both Sean & Kevin are well-known for their creative use of light to produce award winning images & so to have both of them leading our July trip, well, our guests are in for a real treat!
