Species profile

## About this species

The African Buffalo is a large, heavily built bovine found across sub-Saharan Africa, with adult males weighing up to 850 kg. It is highly social, living in herds that can number in the thousands, and is considered one of the most dangerous animals on the continent due to its unpredictable temperament. Both sexes bear large, curved horns that meet at a central boss on the forehead, which is a distinctive feature used in identification & age estimation.

**Habitat**

African Buffalos are found in a variety of habitats including savannahs, grasslands, floodplains, & dense forests across sub-Saharan Africa, always remaining close to a reliable water source.

Field notes

## Photography notes

**Best time**

Early morning & late afternoon during the dry season (June to October) when herds congregate around water sources & the softer light enhances colour & texture.

**Approach**

Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to maintain a safe distance while capturing detailed portraits of the horns & facial expressions. Position yourself near waterholes or river crossings during the dry season for dramatic compositions of large herds & interactions between individuals. Early morning light is ideal for capturing the texture of their dark, rough hides & the dust or mist that often surrounds large groups.
