Species profile

## About this species

The African Elephant is the largest land animal on Earth, characterised by its enormous ears, long trunk & impressive ivory tusks. These highly intelligent & social animals live in matriarchal herds & display complex emotional behaviours including mourning their dead. They are a keystone species, playing a vital role in shaping their environment by clearing vegetation & creating water sources for other wildlife.

**Habitat**

African Elephants inhabit a range of environments including savannah grasslands, bushveld, forests & semi-arid deserts, primarily across sub-Saharan Africa. They are commonly found in protected reserves & national parks such as the Serengeti, Amboseli & Kruger, where permanent water sources & vast stretches of vegetation support large herds.

Field notes

## Photography notes

**Best time**

The dry season (June to October) is ideal as elephants congregate around water sources, making them easier to locate. Early morning & late afternoon provide the best golden light & cooler temperatures when elephants are most active.

**Approach**

Position yourself near watering holes or rivers at dawn & dusk when elephants are most active & the light is soft & warm. Use a telephoto lens of at least 300mm to capture intimate portraits whilst maintaining a safe distance, & look for opportunities to photograph family interactions & young calves. Pay attention to dust & mud-bathing behaviour, as these moments offer dramatic & characterful images with wonderful textural detail.

Signature Destination

Photographing African Elephants NaturesLens African Elephant photography holidays in Kenya’s Maasai Mara & Botswana’s Chobe River are built around patient, behaviour-oriented photography. At four metres at the shoulder for a large bull & with families operating in complex, layered social structures led by experienced matriarchs, elephants reward patient, behaviour-oriented photographers above almost everything else in the African wilderness. The moments that define elephant photography are rarely dramatic in the action sense – they are intimate: a calf sheltering beneath its mother during midday heat, a matriarch steering her family away from perceived danger, bulls sparring at a waterhole in the flat afternoon light. Technically, elephants are more accessible than many photographers expect. Their size means useful images are possible at shorter focal lengths than most African wildlife, & their tolerance of vehicles – particularly in areas with established game drive activity – allows extended, close encounters that give time to compose deliberately rather than react. Where NaturesLens Takes You In Kenya’s Maasai Mara, resident elephant families move through the same river crossing areas used by the wildebeest migration, creating layered composition opportunities during July to October. NaturesLens Kenya itineraries place you with herds across the open plains at golden hour – the combination of low equatorial light & dusty, orange-lit air is one of the most distinctive photographic environments in Africa. In Botswana, the Chobe River region holds the highest concentration of elephants on the continent, & river-based photography from boats allows access to herds crossing between mainland & islands – a perspective impossible on a standard game drive vehicle. Photography Technique & Gear A 300-500mm zoom is the most versatile choice for elephant photography – close enough for tight facial portraits but with range for wider environmental shots of herds on the move. Wide-angle lenses (24-70mm or 16-35mm) are genuinely useful for herd context shots & environmental portraits. Dust is the primary equipment hazard: keep sensor changes to a minimum in the field, use a rocket blower & microfibre cloth, & store bodies & lenses in dustproof bags when not shooting. In bright midday light, watch for extreme highlight exposure on light-coloured skin – elephants in direct sun require active exposure management to retain texture in the lightest areas. You can photograph the African Elephant in Botswana, Kenya, South Africa, & Tanzania. During our photography holidays, the African Elephant is often photographed alongside African Lion, African Leopard, Giraffe, Impala, Leopard, & Plains Zebra. Photography themes commonly associated with this species include African wildlife, photographic safaris based in Africa, wildlife whilst on safari in Africa, African wildlife by night in Kenya, nocturnal wildlife, & shompole wilderness camp.
