Species profile

## About this species

The African Skimmer is a striking waterbird characterised by its vivid orange-red bill with a yellow tip, where the lower mandible is noticeably longer than the upper. It is typically found along large rivers, lakes & reservoirs across sub-Saharan Africa, skimming low over calm water to catch fish with its unique blade-like lower mandible. The species is considered near threatened due to habitat loss, human disturbance & fluctuating water levels affecting its sandbar nesting sites.

**Habitat**

The African Skimmer inhabits large slow-moving rivers, lakes, reservoirs & estuaries across sub-Saharan Africa, favouring areas with exposed sandbars & sandy shores for roosting & nesting. It is closely tied to calm, clear water bodies where it can skim effectively for fish near the surface.

Field notes

## Photography notes

**Best time**

Early morning & late afternoon light provides the best conditions for photography, as the birds are most active during feeding at these times & the warm light enhances the vivid colours of the bill. The dry season - typically May to October depending on region - is ideal as lower water levels concentrate birds on exposed sandbars & activity is more predictable.

**Approach**

Position yourself low to the water's surface to capture the skimming behaviour at eye level, which creates a compelling perspective & helps isolate the bird against a smooth background. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/2000s to freeze the bird's rapid flight & the spray created as its lower mandible cuts through the water. Scout sandbar locations in advance & use a long telephoto lens of 500mm or more to photograph nesting & roosting birds without causing disturbance.
