Species profile

## About this species

The Black Rhinoceros is a critically endangered species native to eastern & southern Africa, distinguished by its hooked upper lip which it uses to grasp leaves & twigs. Despite its name, the species is not truly black but ranges from grey to brown in colour depending on the local soil. It is a solitary & largely territorial animal, known for its unpredictable temperament & impressive bursts of speed when threatened.

**Habitat**

Black Rhinoceros are typically found in semi-arid savannahs, bushland, & dry forests across eastern & southern Africa, particularly in areas with dense thickets of thorny scrub & access to water sources.

Field notes

## Photography notes

**Best time**

Early morning & late afternoon during the dry season (June to October) when rhinos gather at watering holes & vegetation is less dense, making sightings more reliable.

**Approach**

Use a long telephoto lens of at least 400mm to maintain a safe distance while capturing detailed portraits of this dangerous species. Position yourself downwind & remain patient near watering holes or salt licks where rhinos are likely to visit, allowing natural behaviour to unfold. Shoot in the early morning or late afternoon light to capture the texture of the rhino's thick skin & avoid harsh midday shadows.
