It is a highly adaptable omnivore with a varied diet that includes berries, fish, insects & large mammals. Brown bears are known for their impressive size, with males capable of reaching up to 700 kg, and their distinctive shoulder hump of muscle. **Habitat** Brown bears occupy a diverse range of habitats including boreal forests, alpine meadows, tundra, coastal areas & river valleys. Field notes ## Photography notes **Best time** Late summer to early autumn during salmon runs, particularly August & September, offers outstanding opportunities. Early morning & late afternoon light provides the best conditions for photography throughout the active season. **Approach** Position yourself near rivers or streams during salmon runs for dramatic feeding behaviour shots, using a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to maintain a safe distance. Shoot during the golden hours of early morning & late afternoon to capture warm light on the bear's fur and avoid harsh shadows. Use a fast shutter speed of 1/1000s or higher to freeze movement, particularly when bears are active & unpredictable near water. These are powerful, intelligent animals whose behaviour shifts markedly through the year – emerging lean & restless from winter dens in spring, feeding intensively through summer to accumulate fat reserves, & becoming almost frenetically active in late summer as the salmon runs peak & berries ripen. It is the intensity of this activity that makes brown bear photography so compelling: fishing sequences at river falls, cubs play-fighting while their mother watches, bears rolling & grooming in summer meadows. Encounters are extended & predictable, because the bears are focused on feeding rather than flight. Photography Technique & Gear Hide photography with brown bears typically calls for a 300-500mm lens – bears in Finland approach closer than many guests expect, & an 800mm lens can be limiting in the close-range sequences that define the best images. A 100-500mm zoom gives maximum flexibility for both wide scene-setting shots & tight behavioural frames. In Finland’s long summer evenings, light quality is outstanding & ISO rarely needs to exceed 1600; the greater technical challenge is exposure metering on dark bears against bright water or sky backgrounds, which requires active spot or highlight-weighted metering to prevent overexposing the background at the expense of bear detail.
