Species profile

## About this species

The Burrowing Owl is a small, long-legged owl found throughout open landscapes of North & South America. Unlike most owls, it is active during the day & nests underground in burrows dug by mammals such as prairie dogs or ground squirrels. It is recognised by its round head, lack of ear tufts, & bold white eyebrow markings that give it an expressive appearance.

**Habitat**

Open, arid & semi-arid grasslands, prairies, deserts, & agricultural fields with sparse vegetation, where suitable burrowing mammal activity provides ready-made nesting sites.

Field notes

## Photography notes

**Best time**

Early morning & late afternoon during spring & summer offer the best light & activity, as owls are often perched near burrow entrances during these periods. The breeding season from March to August provides excellent opportunities to photograph adults with juveniles.

**Approach**

Approach burrow sites slowly & from a low angle to achieve eye-level shots that create a strong connection with the subject. Use a long telephoto lens of at least 400mm to maintain a respectful distance & avoid disturbing nesting behaviour. Arrive early to scout active burrow locations & position yourself downwind to reduce the chance of alerting the birds.
