Despite its name, it rarely eats fish, instead preying on small mammals, birds, & notably the porcupine. Field notes ## Photography notes **Best time** Early morning & late afternoon during winter & early spring, when snow cover makes tracking easier & the fisher's dark fur contrasts well against white backgrounds **Approach** Set up near known denning sites or forest edges at dawn when fishers are most active, using a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to avoid disturbing the animal. Use a fast shutter speed of 1/500s or higher to freeze the fisher's quick, fluid movements through the undergrowth. Baiting stations used by wildlife researchers can provide excellent opportunities, but always follow ethical guidelines & maintain a respectful distance.
