Species profile

## About this species

The Great Bittern is a large, stocky heron found across Europe, Asia & Africa, known for its remarkable camouflage that allows it to blend seamlessly into reed bed habitats. It is a secretive bird, often standing motionless with its bill pointed skyward to mimic surrounding reeds when threatened. The species is perhaps best recognised by the deep, booming call of the male, which can carry for several kilometres across wetlands during the breeding season.

**Habitat**

Great Bitterns favour extensive freshwater reed beds, fens & wetland margins, typically nesting & roosting deep within Phragmites reed beds adjacent to open water, ditches & slow-moving rivers.

Field notes

## Photography notes

**Best time**

Early morning & late evening throughout the breeding season from March to June offer the best opportunities, as males boom frequently & birds move between reed beds. Winter can also be productive when frozen conditions force Bitterns into the open at the edges of unfrozen waterways.

**Approach**

Position yourself in a hide at the edge of a reed bed well before dawn, as Bitterns are most active in low light conditions during early morning & late evening. Use a long telephoto lens of at least 500mm to capture detail without disturbing the bird, as they are extremely wary & will freeze or retreat into dense reeds if approached too closely. Patience is essential - spend extended periods watching known feeding channels or open water margins at the edge of reedbeds, as the bird will often emerge briefly before retreating again.
