Species profile

## About this species

The indri is the largest living lemur, native to the rainforests of northeastern Madagascar. It has a distinctive black & white coat, striking blue eyes, and a near-absent tail, giving it an almost bear-like appearance. The species is renowned for its haunting, melodic calls that can carry several kilometres through the forest.

**Habitat**

Tropical & subtropical moist broadleaf rainforests in northeastern Madagascar, typically at altitudes ranging from sea level up to around 1800 metres. They favour primary forest with tall trees & are rarely found in heavily degraded or secondary forest.

Field notes

## Photography notes

**Best time**

Early morning hours between 6am & 9am are ideal, as indri are most active shortly after dawn. The dry season from April to October offers better visibility through the forest & more reliable weather conditions.

**Approach**

Position yourself quietly near known singing sites at dawn when the indri are most vocally active & easier to locate. Use a telephoto lens of at least 300mm to capture sharp images through the dense forest canopy without disturbing the animals. Shoot in burst mode to catch dynamic postures as they leap between vertical tree trunks.
