Species profile

## About this species

The Osprey is a large, fish-eating bird of prey found on every continent except Antarctica. It has distinctive brown upperparts & white underparts, with a white head marked by a dark eye stripe. The Osprey is renowned for its dramatic hunting technique, diving feet-first into water to catch fish with its specially adapted reversible outer toe & spiny foot pads.

**Habitat**

Ospreys are typically found near large bodies of open water including lakes, rivers, reservoirs, estuaries & coastal areas, where fish are plentiful. They nest on tall structures such as dead trees, rocky outcrops & artificial platforms, usually close to water.

Field notes

## Photography notes

**Best time**

Late spring through summer during the breeding season offers the best opportunities, particularly in the morning hours when Ospreys are most actively hunting. Migration periods in spring & autumn can also provide excellent photography chances at well-known stopover sites.

**Approach**

Position yourself near a known fishing spot such as a clear lake or river, as Ospreys return repeatedly to productive areas. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/2000s to freeze the action during a dive or when the bird is carrying fish. A telephoto lens of 500mm or longer will allow you to capture frame-filling shots without disturbing the bird at its nest or perch.
