Species profile

## About this species

The panther chameleon is a large, vibrantly coloured reptile native to Madagascar, renowned for the remarkable colour variation displayed by males across different geographic locales. Males can exhibit striking combinations of red, blue, green & orange, while females tend towards more subdued pinks & browns. It is one of the most popular chameleon species among reptile enthusiasts due to its vivid appearance & relatively hardy nature.

**Habitat**

Tropical coastal rainforests, forest edges, scrubland & gardens in northern & eastern Madagascar, often found perched in low shrubs & trees

Field notes

## Photography notes

**Best time**

Mid-morning on warm sunny days when chameleons are actively basking & displaying their most vibrant colours - typically between October & April during the warmer Madagascan season

**Approach**

Use a macro lens to capture the intricate scale texture & independently moving eyes that make this species so visually compelling. Photograph in natural diffused light rather than direct flash, which can cause harsh reflections on the skin & disturb the animal. Move slowly & deliberately when approaching, as sudden movements will cause the chameleon to retreat into cover or change colour dramatically.
