Species profile

## About this species

The Red-breasted Toucan is a striking bird native to south-eastern South America, recognised by its vivid orange-red breast, green-yellow facial skin & large pale bill tipped with red. It inhabits Atlantic Forest regions across southern Brazil, Paraguay & north-eastern Argentina, where it plays an important role as a seed disperser. Compared to other toucans, it is a medium-sized species with a relatively quieter call, often seen in pairs or small groups moving through the forest canopy.

**Habitat**

The Red-breasted Toucan is found primarily in humid Atlantic Forest, including montane & lowland rainforest, as well as forest edges, secondary growth & partially wooded areas across south-eastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay & north-eastern Argentina.

Field notes

## Photography notes

**Best time**

Early morning hours from dawn until around 9am offer the best light & highest activity levels. The austral spring & summer months from September through December coincide with fruiting seasons & breeding activity, making this the most rewarding period overall.

**Approach**

Position yourself near fruiting trees at forest edges during early morning when the birds are most active & feeding, as this offers excellent opportunities for close, well-lit shots. Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture sharp detail without disturbing the birds, & set a fast shutter speed of 1/1000s or higher to freeze any sudden head movements. Scout locations in advance by listening for their distinctive calls, & be patient near known perches where they regularly rest between feeding bouts.
