Species profile

## About this species

The Red-crowned Crane is one of the rarest cranes in the world, recognised by its striking white plumage, black neck & wings, and the distinctive red patch of bare skin on its crown. It stands up to 158 cm tall, making it one of the tallest flying birds on Earth. The species is deeply symbolic in East Asian cultures, representing longevity & good fortune.

**Habitat**

The Red-crowned Crane inhabits wetlands, marshes, reed beds & shallow river banks, favouring areas with tall grasses & open water. Key populations are found in Hokkaido, Japan & along the Korean Peninsula, with breeding populations in north-eastern China & south-eastern Russia.

Field notes

## Photography notes

**Best time**

Winter months from November to March offer the best opportunities, particularly at dawn & dusk when the birds are most active at feeding & roosting sites. The courtship dancing displays in late winter provide spectacular behavioural photography opportunities.

**Approach**

Position yourself low to the ground to capture the crane at eye level, which creates a more intimate & dramatic composition against the landscape. Visit during winter feeding sessions at known sites in Japan or South Korea, where large groups gather & display elaborate courtship dances that offer exceptional photographic opportunities. Use a long telephoto lens of at least 500 mm to avoid disturbing the birds, & shoot in burst mode to capture the dynamic wing movements during flight & dancing displays.
