Perched on a broad-leafed Heliconia or Philodendron leaf, it is the archetype of Neotropical colour & a species where the difficulty is not finding a spectacular image – but finding a fresh take on one of the most photographed frogs in the world. Where NaturesLens Takes You NaturesLens photographs the Red-eyed Tree Frog on nocturnal sessions in the Caribbean lowland rainforests of Costa Rica, where the species is particularly abundant around forest ponds, streams, & vegetation over water. Night sessions at known breeding sites during or just after rain produce the richest opportunities, with frogs descending from the canopy to call, mate, & lay eggs. Photography Technique & Gear Night photography requires a macro or short telephoto (90-180mm macro or 300mm zoom) with a twin or ring flash for clean illumination. Shoot from frog eye-level whenever possible to engage the iconic red eye directly. Use a small aperture (f/11-f/16) to maximise depth of field across the eye & toe pads.
