Sacred to the ancient Maya & Aztec civilisations, & protected as the national bird of Guatemala, the Quetzal carries a weight of cultural significance matched only by its visual impact: an emerald-&-crimson body, an iridescent green crest, & twin tail plumes that reach up to 65 centimetres in length on breeding males. Seeing one perched in a fruiting wild avocado tree at 2,000 metres in the cloud forest is a genuinely arresting experience, even for photographers who have worked extensively in the Neotropics. The Quetzal’s dependence on fruiting trees, particularly wild avocado species in the genus Persea, makes it predictable when fruiting trees are located – birds return repeatedly to harvest fruit, & a known fruiting tree in season can provide all-day photographic access to multiple individuals including both sexes & immature birds. Where NaturesLens Takes You Costa Rica is the foundation of NaturesLens Quetzal photography. The montane cloud forests of the San Gerardo de Dota valley & the Talamanca range hold one of the most accessible & productive Quetzal populations in Central America, with birds present year-round at altitude & most active during the March to June nesting season. Our Costa Rica itineraries are timed specifically to coincide with peak Quetzal activity, & our local guides know individual fruiting tree locations across the valley. The same itineraries cover a wide range of additional cloud forest & lowland rainforest species – hummingbirds, toucans, trogons, manakins – making this one of the most species-rich birding photography programmes in the NaturesLens calendar. Photography Technique & Gear Cloud forest photography presents consistent technical challenges: low light filtered through dense canopy, birds perched in shadow against bright sky gaps, & the ever-present risk of mist or light rain. A 500-600mm lens with fast continuous autofocus is important for birds moving between forest interior & canopy edge. High ISO capability is essential – ISO 3200 to 6400 is routine in forest conditions, & a fast maximum aperture (f/4 minimum) becomes critically important. For perched Quetzals at known fruiting trees, a tripod with a fluid head provides stability for extended waits & allows precise reframing when birds shift position. The tail plumes trail below the bird when perched – leave space below the subject in your frame to capture them fully. You can photograph the Resplendent Quetzal in Costa Rica.
