Species profile

## About this species

The Spotted Fritillary is a medium-sized butterfly found across Europe, North Africa & parts of Asia, known for its vivid orange upperwings marked with black spots & intricate pale chequered patterns on the undersides. It is a highly variable species, with females often displaying more subdued colouration than males. The butterfly is a strong flier & can be found in warm, sunny habitats where its larval foodplants grow.

**Habitat**

Warm, dry grasslands, flowery meadows, scrubby hillsides & open woodland edges, particularly on calcareous soils with an abundance of low-growing wildflowers

Field notes

## Photography notes

**Best time**

Mid-morning on warm sunny days from late May through to August, with peak activity in June & July when adults are most abundant

**Approach**

Approach slowly during the cooler morning hours when the butterfly is basking & less likely to fly, allowing you to get close for detailed wing shots. Use a macro lens to capture the intricate chequered underside patterns when the butterfly rests with wings closed on vegetation. Position yourself at the same level as the subject & use a fast shutter speed to freeze any movement caused by a light breeze.
