Species profile

## About this species

The Tibetan Wolf is a subspecies of grey wolf native to the Tibetan Plateau & surrounding mountainous regions of Central Asia. It is a medium-sized wolf with a thick, pale greyish-buff coat that provides insulation against the harsh alpine climate. The subspecies is considered genetically distinct & is adapted to high-altitude environments where it preys primarily on large ungulates such as Tibetan antelope & blue sheep.

**Habitat**

High-altitude grasslands, alpine meadows & rocky plateaus of the Tibetan Plateau, typically at elevations between 3,000 & 5,000 metres above sea level, extending into parts of China, India, Nepal & Central Asia.

Field notes

## Photography notes

**Best time**

Early morning & late afternoon during spring & autumn offer the best combination of soft light & animal activity. Winter months can provide dramatic snowy backdrops & wolves may be more visible against pale terrain.

**Approach**

Use a long telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture sharp images from a safe distance without disturbing the animal's natural behaviour. Position yourself downwind & wear muted, earthy colours to avoid detection, as these wolves have keen senses & will retreat if alarmed. Early morning light on the open plateau offers both favourable golden tones & increased wolf activity as they return from nocturnal hunts.
