## About this species

The tomato frog is a large, brightly coloured amphibian native to Madagascar, named for the vivid red-orange colouration of the female. Males are typically smaller & duller in colour, ranging from yellowish-orange to brown. When threatened, the frog secretes a sticky white substance from its skin as a defence mechanism against predators.

**Habitat**

Tomato frogs are found in the tropical rainforests & marshlands of north-eastern Madagascar, particularly around slow-moving or stagnant water, leaf litter, & muddy ground near forest edges.

**Best time**

Dusk & dawn during the wet season (November to April) when the frogs are most active & visible near water sources.

**Approach**

Use a macro lens to capture the striking skin texture & vivid colouration in close-up detail. Position yourself at ground level to achieve an eye-level perspective, which creates a more engaging & natural composition. Diffused artificial lighting or an overcast sky helps avoid harsh reflections on the frog's moist skin.
