Species profile

## About this species

The Whooper Swan is a large, elegant white swan native to the northern Palaearctic region. It is distinguished from the similar Bewick's Swan by its larger size & the extensive yellow patch on its bill, which extends past the nostrils. Whooper Swans are highly vocal birds, producing loud, bugling calls that are a characteristic sound of their wintering grounds.

**Habitat**

Whooper Swans breed on large lakes, rivers & wetlands in boreal & subarctic zones, favouring areas with abundant aquatic vegetation. During winter they frequent shallow coastal estuaries, flooded fields, freshwater lochs & lowland wetlands across Europe & Asia.

Field notes

## Photography notes

**Best time**

Winter months from November to March offer the best opportunities in the UK & northern Europe, when large flocks gather at traditional wintering sites. Early morning provides soft, warm light & calmer water for reflections, while feeding activity tends to be highest around dawn & dusk.

**Approach**

Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture close-up detail without disturbing the birds, as they can be wary of human presence. Shoot from a low angle near the water's edge to achieve a pleasing, eye-level perspective that emphasises the swan's graceful form & reflections. Overcast lighting conditions can be ideal for photographing white-plumaged birds, helping to reduce harsh highlights & retain feather detail.
