Species profile

## About this species

The grey wolf is the largest wild member of the Canidae family, found across a wide range of habitats throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Wolves are highly social animals, living in family packs with complex communication behaviours including howling, scent marking & body language. They are apex predators that play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems through top-down regulation of prey populations.

**Habitat**

Wolves inhabit a wide variety of environments including boreal forests, tundra, grasslands, mountains & temperate woodlands, ranging from the ancient forests of Bialowieza to the high-altitude plateaus of Tibet & the sub-arctic wilderness of the Yukon.

Field notes

## Photography notes

**Best time**

Winter months offer the best opportunities, as wolves are more visible against snow & are highly active during the rut & pack hunts - trips to Yellowstone in February & the Yukon in October are ideal. Early morning & late afternoon light provide the most favourable conditions for photography year-round.

**Approach**

Use a long telephoto lens of 500mm or more to capture wolves without disturbing pack behaviour, particularly in open landscapes like Yellowstone in winter where wolves are active in snowy terrain. In forested environments such as Bialowieza, position yourself near known travel corridors at dusk or dawn & use a tripod to compensate for low light conditions. In winter locations like Yellowstone or the Yukon, a white or neutral-toned hide or camouflage can help you blend into snowy surroundings & allow wolves to pass closer.
