Photographers of all levels of experience are invited to join for this 3 night Comical Puffins of Skomer Island photography holiday on an island off the coastline of . You will depart from a tiny cove in Pembrokeshire; this 3 night visit takes you to a location that delivers outstanding seabird photography opportunities year after year.

The 3 night Comical Puffins of Skomer Island photography holiday has an itinerary designed for bird photography of puffins at various locations over the island; your opportunities will hopefully incorporate the golden light of sunrise & sunset.

Over the 3 night trip, the locations should provide opportunities for capturing images of Atlantic Puffin & other species that call the island home.

What is the best time of year to see the Puffins of Skomer Island?

Puffins are among the most iconic & beloved birds in the world, & the chance to view them up close is a memorable experience. Skomer Island off the coast of is one of the best places in the UK to admire puffins, with thousands of these birds nesting in the island’s cliffs each year.

From April to June, the island is teaming with puffins as these birds come to shore to mate, breed, & raise their young. During this time, visitors to Skomer can see hundreds of puffins around the island. But to get the best views of these birds, you must visit Skomer during the peak months of May, June, & early July, when the puffin population is at its highest.

May & June are ideal for seeing puffins’ wonderful courtship displays & their adorable young. During these months & into July, you may also observe puffins carrying fish back to their burrows as they use these tasty treats to feed their chicks.

How Many Puffins Are There on Skomer Island?

There are approximately 10,000 breeding pairs of Atlantic Puffins on the Skomer & Skokholm Islands, earning the islands the reputation of being one of Britain’s most critical puffin colonies. The Atlantic Puffins arrive in mid-April to nest in burrows, many of which have been dug by the island’s significant rabbit population. The final Atlantic Puffins depart the island by the second or third week in July.

The stated dates are provisional. The definitive dates will be made available in mid-October 2024. However, we will take bookings before thabecauseat the dates are not yet fixed.

The following is the proposed itinerary for this photography holiday, it should be considered provisional & subject to change.

  • Day 1 - Assemble Martin's Haven, Dale Peninsula, Pembrokeshire - transfer to Skomer Island - overnight on Skomer Island
  • Day 2 - Puffin photography on Skomer Island - overnight on Skomer Island
  • Day 3 - Puffin photography on Skomer Island - overnight on Skomer Island
  • Day 4 - Return to Martin's Haven

Bird Photography Opportunities Beyond Just The Puffins of Skomer Island

Skomer Island boasts a rich variety of bird species beyond just puffins. Among them are the stonechat, oystercatcher, dunnock, meadow pipit, & sedge warbler. This diverse avian population enhances the island’s biodiversity, drawing bird enthusiasts & nature photographers alike. The stonechat is easily identifiable by its striking red chest & dark head, often perching on shrubs & fences across the island. Oystercatchers frequent the shoreline, their vivid orange bills contrasting beautifully with the coastal landscape. Dunnocks, meadow pipits, & sedge warblers contribute their unique melodies to the chorus of bird songs that permeate the air, complementing Skomer’s natural allure. The peak season for birdwatching is during the breeding period spanning from April to July when the island is teeming with the captivating sights & sounds of these remarkable avian creatures.

NaturesLens photography holidays require a minimum number of participants in order to be viable. If this minimum number is not met, the photography holiday may not go ahead.

In the event that the minimum number for a photography holiday to go ahead is not reached, NaturesLens reserves the right to cancel any given photography holiday. In that event 100% of monies received will be returned. However, NaturesLens is not responsible for expenses incurred by its customers.

Not all mentioned wildlife can be observed & photographed at all times of the year, thus some activities may be considered seasonal & not available.

Please note the cuisine on many of the NaturesLens photography holidays is authentic & typical of the region in which you are travelling. International or western cuisine is often NOT available. If you have any concerns over the food arrangements or have any special dietary requirements, please contact us prior to making a booking.

All personal luggage are the responsibility of the owner & we request that photography holiday participants limit their luggage to the equivalent of one suitcase, one flight bag, one camera bag & tripod.
