It is also the home of the wintering Eagle, a majestic species that can often be seen soaring in the sky against the backdrop of the beautiful Hungarian landscape. The Winter Eagles visit the Hortobágy from early autumn to late winter each year, & their presence is an important part of the Park’s ecology. The most popular subspecies of these birds is the [White-tailed Eagle](https://natureslens.co.uk/holidays_to_photograph/eagles/), which can range in size from 10-20 inches & weigh up to 8 pounds. The [White-tailed Eagle](https://natureslens.co.uk/photograph/white-tailed-eagle/) is a fierce predator with powerful talons & a curved bill to pluck fish out of the water. They also have superior eyesight & can spot prey from up to three miles away. During winter, the White-tailed Eagles gather along the Tisza River in the Hortobágy National Park, where they feed on fish, small mammals, birds, reptiles, & amphibians. They also scavenge for carrion left by other predators. The Eagles typically hunt alone or in pairs, using their large wingspan to soar above the water in search of food.
