The Lobo Valley sits in the far north of the Serengeti, a region of granite kopjes, seasonal riverbeds & open plains that most safari itineraries never reach. During the dry season the grass burns down to a few inches, stripping away cover & pushing predators into the open where the light does the rest of the work. The kopjes themselves rise out of the plains like islands, offering shade, vantage points & denning sites, & it’s around these formations that much of the photography here happens. Dust hangs in the low evening air, & the heat of the day settles wildlife into predictable rhythms that repeat, session after session.

This is lion & leopard country in the truest sense. The [African lion](https://natureslens.co.uk/photograph/african-lion/) prides resident to Lobo hunt at dawn & dusk, when the light is low & warm & the grass throws long shadows across the plains, & because these prides hold territory here rather than passing through, you’re often working the same individuals across consecutive mornings. The [African leopard](https://natureslens.co.uk/photograph/african-leopard/) population uses the rocky kopjes & fringing woodland throughout the day, resting on exposed branches or rock ledges where the elevation gives a clean, uncluttered background. Because sightings are repeatable rather than one-off, there’s time to work an individual leopard properly, adjusting position, waiting out poor light, & returning to the same animal the following day if the first session didn’t deliver.

The trip is built around vehicle-based sessions with extended field time rather than fixed drive slots, which matters when a pride is mid-hunt or a leopard has just moved position & the light is about to turn. Groups are capped at seven photographers, each with their own vehicle space, so there’s no competing for the window seat or the clean angle. [David](https://natureslens.co.uk/about/david/) leads every departure, & having run this itinerary annually since 2025, the logistics around vehicle positioning, timing & camp routine have been refined specifically around what the predator activity in this valley actually requires. Ethical distance is maintained throughout, with sightings approached on the animals’ terms rather than pushed for a closer frame.

What you come home with from [Lobo Valley](https://natureslens.co.uk/specific-location/lobo-valley/) is a body of work built on repetition rather than luck: a [lion](https://natureslens.co.uk/photograph/african-lion/) cub testing its footing against a pride member in first light, a [leopard](https://natureslens.co.uk/photograph/leopard/) descending a kopje at dusk with the rock still holding the day’s heat in the frame, a hunt sequence worked from position rather than glimpsed in passing. These aren’t grab shots taken from a passing vehicle. They’re images built from time spent with animals that hold territory here, & that’s a different kind of photograph to bring home.

This trip is one of our [wildlife photography holidays in Tanzania](https://natureslens.co.uk/discover/africa/tanzania/) & part of our programme of [African wildlife photography holidays](https://natureslens.co.uk/discover/africa/).

## Lions & Location

### Why is the Lobo Valley particularly good for lion photography?

The Lobo Valley is home to well-established lion prides with predictable territorial patterns, offering photographers repeated opportunities to document social behaviour & territorial displays. These prides move predictably between shade & hunting grounds, creating multiple encounters throughout the safari rather than random sightings.

## Leopard Behaviour

### What leopard behaviours can I photograph in the northern Serengeti?

Leopards in the Lobo Valley emerge at dawn & dusk along seasonal watercourses, using elevated rocky positions & fever tree corridors for hunting. You can photograph them dragging kills into elevated positions, demonstrating strength & survival strategy, plus their movement through dappled light filtering through woodland cover.

## Wildlife Species

### What wildlife can I expect to photograph?

Species regularly photographed include African Lion, African Leopard, African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Giraffe, Plains Zebra, Blue Wildebeest, Grant's Gazelle, Impala & Olive Baboon. Additional species such as spotted hyenas may also be encountered during competitive feeding situations. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed.

## Time in Field

### How much time do we spend on predator photography?

This is a dedicated predator photography safari with 8-10 hours daily in the field focusing on lions & leopards. Early starts catch leopards before they retreat to shade, while late afternoons bring lion prides back to activity, maximising opportunities for predator encounters.

## Vehicle Photography

### How do the vehicle-based photography sessions work?

Vehicles accommodate just seven photographers, ensuring everyone gets clean angles without overcrowding & sufficient space for telephoto lenses. When behaviour develops - cubs playing, territorial disputes, hunting sequences - we have the time to let it unfold naturally without rushing to the next sighting.

## Small Group Benefits

### What are the benefits of a 7-photographer group?

The 7-photographer limit ensures everyone has sufficient space in safari vehicles for clean positioning, receives personalised guidance from David Miles & enjoys a more relaxed photographic experience. Vehicle positioning becomes critical when working with lions & leopards, requiring flexibility to stay with developing situations.

## Accommodation

### What is the accommodation like?

You'll stay at Lobo Valley Camp for 7 nights on a full board basis with single occupancy accommodation included as standard. The permanent tented camp eliminates constant packing & unpacking that fragments many safaris - you unpack once & spend your time in the field.

## Pride Dynamics

### What lion behaviours can I photograph?

Lion prides in the Lobo Valley demonstrate coordinated hunting strategies, territorial displays & intimate family interactions. You can photograph pride dynamics as lions coordinate hunting sequences, social behaviour between family members, & lions resting in woodland shade during midday heat for detailed portraits.

## Photography Skills

### Do I need advanced photography skills?

No advanced skills are required, though you should be comfortable with longer focal lengths & vehicle-based work. David Miles & the local guides provide experienced guidance suitable for photographers of all levels during the safari sessions.

## Equipment Needed

### What equipment should I bring?

Bring a camera capable of handling African heat & dust conditions, telephoto lenses suitable for vehicle-based wildlife photography, spare batteries & memory cards. Detailed equipment recommendations will be provided before departure.

## Seasonal Advantage

### Why is this time of year good for predator photography?

The northern Serengeti operates differently from the southern plains during this season, with resident predators following established patterns rather than migration chaos. Lion prides hold predictable territories & leopards use the same fever tree corridors season after season.

## Trip Inclusions

### What's included in the trip cost?

Trip cost includes 7 nights at Lobo Valley Camp, all meals on a full board basis, guiding by David Miles, all game drives & photography sessions, park fees & airport transfers from Kilimanjaro. Single occupancy accommodation is included as standard.
