You will photograph the many White-tailed Eagles that spend winter in this vast area.
This trip, scheduled for 24th – 29th January 2025, has an itinerary designed to photograph the many White-tailed Eagles that spend the winter in this vast area.
Throughout this trip, the locations should provide opportunities to capture images of several species, including Common Buzzard, Long-eared Owl, Saker Falcon & White-tailed Sea Eagle.
The Hortobágy National Park in Hungary is known for its picturesque scenery & rich wildlife. It is also the home of the wintering Eagle, a majestic species that can often be seen soaring in the sky against the backdrop of the beautiful Hungarian landscape. The Winter Eagles visit the Hortobágy from early autumn to late winter each year, & their presence is an integral part of the Park’s ecology.
The most popular subspecies of these birds is the White-tailed Eagle, which can range in size from 10-20 inches & weigh up to 8 pounds. The White-tailed Eagle is a fierce predator with powerful talons & a curved bill to pluck fish out of the water. It also has superior eyesight & can spot prey from up to three miles away.
During winter, White-tailed Eagles gather along the Tisza River in Hortobágy National Park, where they feed on fish, small mammals, birds, reptiles, & amphibians. They also scavenge for carrion left by other predators. The Eagles typically hunt alone or in pairs, using their large wingspan to soar above the water in search of food.
The Winter Eagles of Hortobágy are a magnificent sight & symbolize the biodiversity of the National Park. Visitors can observe these beautiful birds from a safe distance & appreciate their natural beauty.
